NEGOTIATOR/explorer

About Your Personality Type
You see the big picture. You easily take the broad, long view of almost any topic. You are comfortable juggling myriad facts. You tend to synthesize material easily and think in webs of factors, not straight lines. You are imaginative and enjoy ideas.

You are also socially savvy. You are good at both talking and listening. And you generally read people's faces, body postures and tone of voice accurately, so you often intuitively understand what people want and need.

You are also highly compassionate. You care deeply about others. So you are inclined to make personal sacrifices to be a supportive friend and colleague. And you are idealistic and altruistic; you like to work to improve the world.

And you have an adventurous side; you enjoy new ideas and novel experiences and you want to share these with an enthusiastic partner. But you are particularly fond of people who are direct, decisive, focused and tough-minded, people who complement your more flexible, agreeable and affable style.
Negotiator primary traits

* Sees the big picture
* Imaginative
* Intuitive
* Verbal skills
* Empathetic
* Trusting
* Introspective

Explorer secondary traits

* Novelty seeking
* Impulsive and spontaneous
* Curious
* Creative
* Flexible
* Open-minded
* Energetic

In Love and Relationships
As a Negotiator, you seek a spiritual, life long connection to a "true love". But you don't want someone who is emotionally dependent. You admire people who need a good deal of autonomy. Marriage is important to you; but the social pledge of matrimony is far less sacred than the personal commitment you privately make to your beloved. You avoid conflict and strive for harmony in your primary relationship. So you express your love regularly-with hugs, thoughtful presents, romantic weekends or by creating other special times together. And you want a mate who is daring, playful and adventurous, yet one who will balance you-someone who is calm, decisive, strong-willed, focused and supportive of your enthusiastic, caring and imaginative spirit.
Relating to others
You dislike conflict. You seek "win-win" solutions. You are good at sharing power and ideas. And you are a master at the art of intimacy-building deep and exciting relationships with others. Nevertheless, you often enjoy solitude or intense interactions with just one individual or a few close friends. And you particularly enjoy people who like to play with abstract theories and ideas, provide insights, search for symbolic meanings in life and relationships and have a broad interest in the world.
Things to be aware of

* Because you can see so many angles to an issue or decision, you can be indecisive.
* Your need to please can turn to placating and your trusting nature can make you gullible.
* When you feel betrayed you can be unforgiving and hold a grudge too long.

Spark Factor
You tend to naturally gravitate to DIRECTOR/explorers.

apparently i've taken this test. who are the director/ explorers?

NTs and STPs, mostly, from what I've seen.

Basically, they're the yin to our yang (Im negotiator/explorer too). Negotiators tend to be more indecisive but intuitive, empathetic and big-picture thinkers whereas Directors are the more decisive, goal-oriented, ambitious, action oriented people who focus more on specific details that need to be dealt with - hence we compliment one another. Explorers are the curiosity, novelty driven people - they tend to need someone equally adventurous to keep up with them.

There are...some correlations, I suppose. The simplistic format is:

NF= Negotiator
NT=Director
SP= Explorer
SJ= Builder

However, I think it is definitely possible to be one of these types with other function preferences, as this thread already indicates. Especially as combinations are possible, such as Director-Negotiator (first and aux).

The idea is that each type is linked to a specific chemical in our brain (Helen Fisher has done extensive testing on this)

Negotiators are linked to estrogen (and from that oxytocine and vas-something)
Directors are linked to testosterone
Builders are linked to serotonins
Explorers are linked to dopamine

I have the book if you'd like me to elaborate more on things :)

Would you say Explorer/Director is more ESTP? :thinking: It's interesting that they pair explorers together and builders together but negotiators are matched with directors.

Since I got Explorer/Negotiator I'm interested in what type tendencies that might lead to hehe.

Well, they tested this theory of attraction on a dating site with over 7 million people. Apparently there is truth to both sayings: like attracts like and opposites attract. You see, builders prefer fellow builders as they prefer someone who values the same things they do. Similarly, explorers need someone who can keep up with their novelty seeking and therefore prefer someone as adventurous as they are whereas Negotiators and Directors tend to be two sides of the same coin and very much compliment each others skills.

They very much state that *all* combinations can work given awareness and respect for the differences between the two partners, but the tendencies are that these combos are most attracted to each other and in theory work best.

Again, I think that while there is some overlap with MBTI, it is unlikely to be a perfect match and unwise to really focus on the correlation. With that said, I do find it interesting that MBTI pairs people with their opposite, whatever their type. And I have to admit that the attraction/partner theory - although it works in my case - seemed the most wonky in both socionics and MBTI. I find that helen fishers is way more accurate, imho. That, and there are actual studies backing it up.

As for your question, I guess I'd consider an ESTP likely Explorer/Director. Though I can think of one STP who I know beyond a shadow of a doubt to be Director/Explorer. Hence the previous disclaimer.

You are a DIRECTOR/builder

About Your Personality Type
You are an independent thinker who builds theories and approaches problems with an analytical, exacting, systematic and resourceful mind. And with your persistence, logic and determination, you tend to find innovative solutions to complex problems. You are particularly good with technical problems, those of mechanics, engineering, math, medicine, accounting, music or other "rule based" systems.

Although you enjoy being part of a stable, secure social network, you easily spend time alone, pursuing your own projects and goals at your own speed, according to your own rules. You can focus your attention to the exclusion of all around you. And you have a deep sense of autonomy.

You are a private person; you contain your emotions. You are also calm, efficient, quick to make decisions and remarkably self-disciplined. Yet you have a traditional, even sentimental streak. Family is important to you and you can be very protective of those you love. Director primary traits
Decisive
Focused
Analytical
Logical
Competitive
Self disciplined
Independent
Builder secondary traits
Traditional
Social
Loyal
Dependable
Patient
Community oriented
Orderly

In Love and Relationships

As a Director you admire and collect knowledge; so you want a partner with whom you can have focused, educated, and often theoretical discussions on intellectual topics-a mind mate. You are direct and tough-minded, too. So you are attracted to someone who can complement you-someone who is verbally graceful, who weighs alternatives carefully and listens actively, and has well-honed social skills. Because you contain your emotions, you also gravitate to a mate who is warm and emotionally expressive. Yet you do not like people who engage in public displays of emotion, showing lack of self-containment. Because you have difficulty tolerating controlling people, you need a mate who is flexible, even indecisive. You particularly admire a partner who is self-sufficient. And you like a mate who is eager to help you make a stable home and maintain your public, business, and social ties. Relating to others Because you are ambitious, tough-minded and hardworking, your close friends admire you. In return, you can be fiercely loyal and protective of all those you love. Yet your complex personality is often hidden behind a wall of composure and logic.

Things to be aware of
You are susceptible to intense anger when you feel hurt, disappointed or frustrated.
Your ambition can lead to workaholism.
You can become impatient with people and situations that appear simple-minded or circuitous.

Spark Factor - You tend to naturally gravitate to NEGOTIATOR/builders.

Dunno if we've seen this test here, it's the Helen Fisher test at Chemistry.com. (If there's another thread I missed, we can merge them, no biggie.)

Her system I think has been discussed by Eric B and others in conjunction with the Four Humours style temperaments, since she has four archetypes (Director, Negotiator, Explorer, Builder) that are paired up in order to create a type read. She believes (at least for the purposes of her schtick here, which might easily be all this is) that these are related to particular hormones or neurotransmitters (testosterone, estrogen, dopamine, serotonin).

NEGOTIATOR/Director as well.

Helen Fisher is how I came to find MBTI. It was actually a talk she gave at CARTA that started it all for me.

I wonder how type incest would work with her system.

I've taken this before and got Negotiator and Explorer tied. Today, I took it and got Negotiator/Builder. I'd say the former is more true to who I've been for most of my life. I'm in an unusual phase right now.
