You are likely one of these two types: Outsider, The Merchant. One reflects your dharma type, the other the Life Cycle you are in. Click on each to find out more.

    The Outsider

You are an OUTSIDER. Outsiders are the Rebels of the Dharma Type family. They often grow up feeling biologically, philosophically, or culturally different from their surroundings, and sometimes have a hard time finding their own identities… who they really are. In their quest to discover themselves they may opt for tattoos, unique clothing, or behavior that effectively distinguishes them from the rest of the world. Outsiders often embrace or live in cultures different than their own.

Because they are searching for themselves, Outsiders are quick to identify with anything that personifies something they believe. From Egypt and her mysteries, to Vedic devotional chanting, Outsiders espouse ideologies that reflect the truth of their real identity. As a matter of rebellion, they often embody exotic or different beliefs in order to assert their independence from ‘normal’ people. They are masters of change, and when one identity no longer suits them, it is quickly shed for a new and better fit. From Rastafari chic to business casual, they change fashions with the seasons, all with the passion of their quest for unique self-expression.

Outsiders also excel at blending disparate entities to make a wholly new creation from their union. This is the cook who combines Asian and Western recipes to create fusion cuisine. It is the Country singer who mixes gospel and blues to create rock and roll. It is Martin Luther King bringing Gandhi and the Bhagavad Gita to bear upon the American social scene. This is the yogi who melds yoga and fitness to create a marketable new workout craze. When Outsiders can bring the experience of their eclectic backgrounds into society, they change society for good. When they simply act out and blame the world for their problems, they undermine their ability to create positive change.

Outsiders need to take full responsibility for their lives, even things that are beyond their control, such as handicaps or social injustices, and share their truth with the world. Only by taking responsibility, rather than blaming the world, can the Outsider reach to the lofty heights.

Outsiders seek freedom above all other things– the freedom to be themselves. But in order to have freedom, they must free others. Learning how to do that is a lifelong quest!
Famous Outsiders include: Antonio Banderas, David Beckham, Halle Berry, Bjork, David Blaine, Richard Branson, Yul Brynner, Tim Burton, George Carlin, Johnny Cash, Jesus Christ, Salvador Dali, Johnny Depp, Jimi Hendrix, Martin Luther King Jr., Evel Knievel, Jeddu Krishnamurti, John Lennon, Martin Scorsese, Sting, Claudia Richey, Jesse Ventura, and Denzel Washington

    The Merchant

You are a MERCHANT type. The Merchant’s natural talents lie in sustaining, sheltering, and providing for the material needs of people. They work well in any profession that caters to the masses, be it in non-essential goods such as fashion and entertainment, or day to day necessities like food, hospitality, clothing, and drugs. Their natural ability to network and manage material resources also makes them masters of trade, commerce, and banking. Sales is a natural profession for Merchants, as they have the ability to evoke and shape strong emotions in others. Since most of us are led by our emotions, Merchants generate success by attaching their products to the positive feelings people want to have. This ability is also supremely useful in the entertainment industry, where Merchants excel at creating, performing, and producing popular music, art, and movies.

Merchants are the most temperamental types, and have to learn to manage their emotions if they’re to sustain good health. In extremes, they can even become manic-depressive. They have a social ease that allows them to grease the gears of society and makes them generally popular and well-liked. They also have a great feel for what’s valuable and relevant in pop culture, which makes them trendsetters. Merchants need to pay attention not to seem too glib or disingenuous. Because of their great enthusiasm they may say things that they cannot follow up on, and be perceived as bending the truth by others.

Merchants are very fond of rituals, like parties, weddings, or spiritual ceremonies. They are guardians to the most valuable things in life because they know how to attract and keep them. From the most beautiful painting, to the most beautiful vidya, or body of knowledge, they work hard to earn and hold the treasures of the world. They also know how to get the most out of their investments of time, money, and energy.

At their core, Merchants feel an emptiness that no objects can fill. This is why they hate to be alone. Ultimately, the antidote for their inner loneliness is CHARITY. Giving and filling others cures the Merchant’s emptiness by filling them with gratitude and blessing. Perhaps this is why so many Merchants turn to entertainment, where they can share their creative energy with audiences, or to philanthropy, where they donate their time and money to benefit others.

Famous Merchant personalities include: Muhammad Ali, Warren Beatty, William F. Buckley Jr., Bill Clinton, Sean Connery, Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hanks, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Marilyn Monroe, Sean Penn, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Oskar Schindler, and John Travolta
But then came the Tongues on that terrible day
Steadfast as winter, they entered the fray
And all heard the music of Alduin's doom
The sweet song of Skyrim, sky-shattering Thu'um

    The Educator

Educators are the wisdom keepers of the Dharma Type family… but they also have a secret…
They are creatures of great wisdom and often great lust. From Ben Franklin to Tiger Woods, famous Educators embody both an image of purity and trust as well as a somewhat scandalous carnal desire. With one foot in the physical world and one foot in the world of ideas, they can find it hard to reconcile their philosophies with everyday reality, especially in their own lives.
Educators are also the Renaissance men and women of the world: they are knowledgeable about a great many things, and are the teachers of society. Whether their platform be politics, sports, academics, or religion, they are the people we trust to uphold the moral order of our civilization. In order to do that effectively, Educators must cultivate honesty, self-discipline, and the ability to practice what they preach…

    The Educator
You are an EDUCATOR. As the name suggests, you are the counselors of the Dharma Type family. People gravitate to you for your wisdom, but you do not always follow your own advice. Unlike LABORERS who are eminently practical, you are the most idea-oriented type, preferring to work in concepts and philosophies rather than day to day practicalities. You are the Renaissance man or woman of the Dharma Type family, possessing a natural love of knowledge and curiosity about the world . Whether it is reading National Geographic, watching the History Channel, or getting advanced university degrees, you are always in pursuit of enlightenment and self-betterment. This tendency is not great for specialization, however, and Educators may become conversant in many subjects, but masters of none.

    educators

Educators have the most delicate constitution of the types, and must take care to not overexert themselves. They may also be clumsy or physically more awkward than the other types. This does not mean that they do not enjoy sports and physical activity– in fact it is very good for them– but that they typically make better coaches than players, and excel at mental, rather than physical pursuits.

As an Educator you have probably experienced the phenomenon of ‘instant karma’ That is, when you do something wrong or improper, the consequences usually come back quickly, and may haunt you forever! This is because, as a paragon of virtue and model for the other types, you are supposed to be beyond the pettiness of the world. Like the Air Element that rules your type, Educators are supposed to soar above the mundane difficulties of everyday life, though they often get entangled by their own powerful desires.

Though the image of virtue and propriety, Educators are also lusty creatures, and must find an acceptable way to express their passions, rather than repress them, for this can lead to scandal when they are eventually exposed. Every day when we turn on the news, we find instances of impropriety in our priests and senators alike. Because people look up to Educators as a model of purity, they must try to avoid letting people down with sub-par behavior.

Famous Educators include: Joan Allen, Woody Allen, Michael Bolton, Julia Child, Mohandas Gandhi, Billy Graham, Bob Dylan, George Lucas, Marilyn Manson, Alanis Morrisette, Moses, Barack Obama, Carl Sagan, Martin Sheen, Oliver Stone, and Tiger Woods.

    The Warrior

You are a WARRIOR type. As the name suggests, Warriors are the protectors and fighters of the Dharma Type family. They are strong and ambitious, and make natural leaders. And while sports, law, and the military are obvious Warrior professions, so is being a stay-at-home mom who makes it a point to protect her kids and family. Like Angelina Jolie, Warriors can fight for their causes on the world stage or on the home front. In fact, Warriors do best in life when they have a cause to fight for, a goal to accomplish. Lacking this, they may grow irritable, stagnant, and lose their way.

When Warriors become lost they can become cynical and fall to vices and self-punishment. They above all need to feel the edge in life, and having a Just Cause to fight for allows them to channel their inborn talents and energies into something worthwhile. At their heart, Warriors are basically Heroes, and need to feel like they are giving their lives for a worthy cause.

Having something to fight for brings out the Warrior’s generosity and courage. Warriors are the only type that will unquestioningly give its life to save another. They are blessed with natural strength that is a beacon for others, and people may sometimes abuse the Warrior’s generosity.

Warriors are blessed with a good constitution. Whereas Laborers are built for endurance, Warriors are made for intensity. The organ that corresponds to Warriors is the heart, which circulates lifeblood and energy through the body. When they do not have a just cause to fight for and are poorly-integrated, Warriors may suffer heart or circulatory problems. Their bodies are built for the rough and tumble, and may take many bruises and injuries over the course of their lives.

Warriors appreciate sincerity and innocence in others, as they can generally tell when someone is being disingenuous.

Famous Warriors include: Joe Biden, Richard Burton, Celine Dion, Robert Downey Jr., Angelina Jolie, John McCain, Paul Newman, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and William Shatner

    The Warrior

Warriors are the superheroes and protectors of the Dharma Type family…
At heart, Warriors are basically Heroes, and need to feel like they are giving their lives for a worthy cause. They can accomplish the impossible when they have something to fight for, a noble goal to strive after. Like soldiers, doctors, and firefighters, they do great things when working to protect others. Even lawyers and politicians, in the pristine spirit of their professions, have the public’s interest first in mind.
But Warriors can become cynical and self-destructive when they lack a Just Cause. They can fall to anger and pride, or succumb to the ugliness of the world and become self-serving, or ridden with vices like alcoholism and gambling. Key to staying healthy for Warriors is cultivating knowledge and wisdom, and harnessing some of their abundant energy to protect others and promote good causes.

You are likely one of these two types: Outsider, The Merchant. One reflects your dharma type, the other the Life Cycle you are in. Click on each to find out more.

Outsiders are the rebels and black sheep of the Dharma Type family…
They rock the boat of convention, by choice or circumstance, and consider themselves reformers and free spirits. Outsider types are unconventional, empathic, and socially conscious. They blend many influences and traditions into their personalities, and can see things from different angles.
Outsiders are also masters of deception. When properly channeled, this can make them great actors, magicians, or musicians… when poorly channeled, it makes them prone to self-deception, delusion, and lies.
The key to the Outsider’s liberation is telling the truth to themselves about themselves. Responsibility and Self-Respect go a long way to keeping Outsiders healthy and free… so that they can free the world in turn…

Merchants are the most memorable people in popular culture…
By sheer force of their personalities, they can achieve great fame, wealth, and social standing. But their charisma and easy social nature hide a core emptiness inside that makes them feel insecure and never good enough. As a result, Merchants try to fill up on company, food, drugs, and entertainment to relieve their loneliness… however their answer lies not in these things, but in Charity. Charity does for the soul what diet does for the body. By ridding themselves of excess and giving of their abundant charm and talents to others, Merchants are freed from loneliness, and given in return a source of nourishment that no material things can match… gratitude.
Merchants are also volatile and temperamental, and have to learn to manage their emotions to sustain good health. They are the most likely to resort to short cuts, such as surgery and drugs, to get to their goals, though this is not always the best answer for them…
