Coriolis In her book, Helen Fisher makes a difference between 4 personalities, each of them driven by a hormone

* The Explorers (Dopamine) (she even refers to MBTI briefly, touches upon the fact that these differences in personality have already been noted before)
* The Builders (Serotonine)
* The Directors (Testosterone)
* The Negotiators (Estrogen)

She also touches upon the fact that the primary is often coupled with a secondary, giving slight differences in personality. As such, it is possible to be a Negotiator in the primary, as estrogen is most present in your body, but you have as a secondary a Director-streak, due to a quite high amount of testosterone influencing your behavior as well. I'd wager many male NFs fit that bill.

From what I can tell, most SJs would be Builders and serotonine driven in their primary, and most SPs would be dopamine-driven as Explorers. NF seems to correspond with estrogen, and NT with testosterone. This is very generally speaking.

I'm not completely sure I trust an anthropologist to talk accurately about neuroscience. Anthropology isn't even science, let alone biology, let alone neurobiology. This part seems pretty uhh...nonscientific to this biologist - I can guarantee that a physically normal male NF does not have higher estrogen levels (or lower testosterone) than a physically normal female NT. Associating traits with real hormones doesn't make things scientific, any more than astrology is scientific because Venus exists.

I understand, but she worked together with other specialists to cover the fields that she wasn't a specialist in. She's got quite a good reputation. Here's her site:

It's been a while since I've read the book as well and I suck at summarizing stuff like this for Ti-minds such as yourself, so feel free to check it out yourself, till your Ti is satisfied :D

Something I've been thinking about...

Evolutionarily speaking, there seems to have been a tendency for men to think "linearly" and for women to think "web-like". I guess, I'd characterize it, in the context of time, as men thinking from "second to minute to hour to day to week....etc etc" and women thinking in terms of "day/night or summer/fall/winter/spring". As such, a linear thinker will have trouble understanding the way something can be both one thing and another, depending, within a context, depending on which context is being referred to. And similarly, a web thinker will be hard pressed to accept the validity of universalizing a context and ignoring the discrepencies that may or may not be apparent.

Assuming the truth of the both, my question is about those men and women who fall outside that trend.

Percentage of men who are web thinkers, primarily? Percentage of females who are linear thinkers, primary?

Is there an "evolutionary tendency" going on today that more or less forces each person to develop both thinking styles suffeciently?

Examples of women linear thinkers and men web thinkers?

Perhaps tie it to typology?

And anything else you might want to say...
I am a male web-thinker...

I don´t think this is tied to typology but to gender. I believe what you are alluding to is that:

men focus better - one thing at a time
women multitask better - many things at once but with diminishing focus as each task is added

I recall reading something, excuse me for not providing links (I can find something later if you like, PM me), that dealt with research on multi tasking. Apparently, as the theory goes, it´s evolutionary: men need to focus to get the foodz via hunting, and women have to take care of the kidz and be aware of their environment lest a beasty-threat sneaks up.

I would say I'm logical, but not in a linear way. That seems more of an Extraverted Thinking thing. When I make plans, I usually take things one step at a time. Trying to come up with more than that beforehand in anything more than the most vague outlines just overwhelms me.

As a non-linear thinker and a man, I think it's a great advantage, because you can combine your masculine qualities with a degree of complexity and intuition most guys lack.

I think women who are linear thinkers benefit in a similar way, by combining feminine qualities with logic.

Now I think about it, I think most successful men are non-linear, and most successful women are linear. Suggesting it is an advantage in this case to be the minority. :)

Ah.... I'm glad you agree with me that Ti is Thinking, but not linear Thinking. I know from experience IxTJs sometimes have a hard time following my train of thought and want me to start from the beginning. Which is pretty reasonable, it's just not how I naturally operate. Things usually make sense and I can explain them, but it's not naturally in order. Putting it in order takes effort.

I respect and admire linear thinkers , they just take adjusting to.

Whatever biological or evolutionary factors there may be, I doubt that sex is that much of a factor in it nowadays. You have more freedom to pursue different fields that interest you and depending on your interests, one kind of thinking may be more favourable the other, so you develop it more. I know plenty of guys (especially in Philosophy and similar fields) who are definitely web thinkers.

I don't believe we can rigidly place all the typical "male-like" characteristics in one single group. For example, I'm great at anything spatial and I'm good at languages, but I'm bad at structuring my thinking in terms of abstract logic i.e. objectives, goals, etc. (no problem with "concrete" logic though).

These presumed one-dimensional archetypes of male and female behavior are meaningless to me.
