Have you ever tried to paint or draw someone and convey emotion through the eyes? There is a difference between someone who looks at you and one who stares off into space, but that is pretty straight foward. The facial feature that actually conveys current emotions is the eyebrows. (look at angry and sad smiley faces for a good example)

As well as the muscles that control your eyelids. You'd be surprised how much those shift when you make an expression. Not to mention pupil dialation. It's all one very subtle shift. And there is also the theory that one side of the face will express one emotion while the other side will express another, such that when you look at someone you read both expressions at once. Like suspicion is a combination of anger and sadness...so one side of the face will look sad and the other side will look angry.
