Is it rude to ask how long a parcel of land has been on the market?

Would this be an impolite question in conversing with a realtor?

No, it's totally alright. That's standard info they offer new house buyers, so land wouldn't be any different.

Ask him how long, and how many people have inquired into purchasing, and even get a rate of offers to buy. Don't look at it as a social interaction between friends, this is an executive decision that you must be well informed to make, and this is a conversation of benefits and costs, where one person could be taking more then their fair share at your expense because they caught you unaware.

Totally not impolite. It's a business transaction. Ask whatever you want. The realtor knows you're about to put down a lot of money, so they expect all kinds of questions from you.
