What's the Ultimate Sandwich?

If you could describe what is, to you, the ultimate sandwich, what would it be?

To me, a fresh BLT on crisp toast comes close.

What do I want from my sandwich? Flavor and texture. It should have some crunch to it, and it should have some juice to it. It can't be too dry or too soft. No exception for PB&J on Wonder Bread; while it may be a good snack, it's by no means the Ultimate Sandwich.

Oh my, this is a golden opportunity to demonstrate my gluttony and eccentiricity in one fell swoop! :cheese:

I actually have a lifelong love affair with monstrous sandwiches.

BACKSTORY:
When I was a kid I read the comic strip "Blondie" in the newspaper all the time. That comic left me with two desires that have both been fulfilled in my life: (1) Having a sweet, gorgeous, blondie for a wife, and (2) Eating monstrous "Dagwood" sandwiches like those he used to carry around on a plate in the comic.

So, that's what I base my ultimate sandwich on conceptually, but I named it differently. My version is:

The Hercules Sandwich

NOTE 1:
Built in layers, vertically arranged from top to bottom.

NOTE 2:
Use fresh pumpernickel bread, cut thick.

Spear Tip: Large Green Olive Stuffed with Blue Cheese
Top: 1 Thick Slice of Pumpernickel Bread.
Layer 11: Salted Butter OR Canola Oil Mayonaisse (On Bread)
Layer 10: Fresh Avocado Slices (With a dash of Lemon Pepper)
Layer 9: Fresh Tomato Slices
Layer 8: Boar's Head Provolone Cheese (1 Slice)
Layer 7: Fresh Baby Spinach (Organic)
Layer 6: Hormel Black Label Bacon, Cooked (5 Slices!!!)
Layer 5: Vidalia Onion Slices (3-4 depending on size)
Layer 4: Boar's Head Gouda Cheese (2 Slices)
Layer 3: Boar's Head Rosemary + Sun Dried Tomato Ham (1/4 pound)
Layer 4: Red Pepper Rings (2-3 depending on size)
Layer 3: Boar's Head Garlic Bologna (1/5 pound)
Layer 2: Boar's Head Swiss Cheese (1 Slice)
Layer 1: Boar's Head Ovengold Turkey Breast (1/4 pound)
Layer 0: Grey Poupon Mustard (On Bread)
Base: 1 Thick Slice of Pumpernickel Bread.

Now THAT is a sandwich. :newwink:

Serve with Salt & Vinegar Lay's Chips, a pickle spear, and a huge glass of Coca Cola Classic, or a Dinkelacker German Beer.

For me as long as it doesn't have tomato and has bacon then it's pretty epic.

my favorite (I've made it a few times! :holy:) is

One large crusty homemade bread roll, sliced in half and toasted

One thin cut chicken breast, marinated in lime juice, salt, garlic and chilis and grilled

thinly sliced avocado, tomato and VERY thinly sliced onion... sprinkling of chiffonaded cilantro as well if available

thin slice of queso de chihuahua melted over the top

 it's lovely

I ate one yesterday, it was the bomb!

See, I have to make sure I don't have to do anything for the rest of the day when I eat one, it seems like there's so much that can go wrong. I'll most likely just want to fall asleep afterwards.

It looks way bigger in the picture, dude.

It's like "Chick Fil A" size chicken breasts, not the monsters we buy at the grocery store. :nono:

You'll be fine!!! Eat one now!!! :woot:

Wow! That is really surprising!

Now, this right here may be epic, but it's not something I'd actually attempt to eat. I mean, I'm sure it's delicious, but it's more of a stunt than it is food.

I'll usually eat two... with a side of spanish rice, refried beans and salad :cheese:

I'd happily eat (one) of your sandwiches... minus the bologna of which I have an irrational fear :ninja:

and to the dagwood sandwich Oberon just posted.... that might take quite a while

MONSTER SANDWICH!

That's actually a great real-life representation of it!

I agree with you, it is not realistic to expect anyone, let alone a group of four, to eat that beast.

That's why I named mine something other than "Dagwood" as I didn't want to instill external expectations into my creation.

To me, a "Dagwood" is basically slang for "the biggest sandwich you would ever normally eat." And that is exactly what I made the Hercules to be! :yay:

Thanks for the pic, Oberon. :)
