Does anyone know much about avacado trees? My neighborhood has a shiton of avacados in fruit right now, and I wanna ask around to see if I can get some freebies :p . Some of the fruits on the trees are now acquiring a purplish color, and the fruits look to have a thick bumpy skin. Would this be the Dickinson variety that I heard was produced in LA (I live in San Diego)? At what point should I pick the fruits?

*wants an avocado tree, but they don't like Indiana all that much*

I happily use guacamole as a sandwich spread and was annoyed when Steak and Shake decided to copy me on that... when I was in Brazil they would make a sweet dessert beverage with avocados, which sounded strange to me but was pretty good... I also like them sliced up on sandwiches or diced in burritos :cheese:

they're ripe when they're a bit squishy, from my experience
