Lake Malawi Cichlids (eg Mbuna) for the win.

Don't need plants, as they like rocky bare tanks. 40 gallons isn't a bad size, and very hardy.

It helps to work out if your water is hard or soft before working out which fish to keep. My water is hard, thus the Rift valley cichlids.
