I wouldn't consider it except for my cousin who had overCtive thyroid used lemongrass after years of struggling and was eventually able to go off meds.

That was before oils were a thing, maybe fifteen years ago. The recommended medical alternative was a radioactive drink to kill part of the thyroid. Most people she knew who went for that option developed cancer within five years.

I think blind faith in any therapeutic or medical options is unwise.

A RADIOACTIVE DRINK!?!?!? Simply letting her be active and exert her energy would've been the simple solution. You should maybe try some vitamin smoothies at say like a Jamba Juice or a similar smoothie parlor, they usually include a lot of vitamin powders which could help you with your low energy levels. What I found to be helpful are a lot of extra B vitamins and complex sugars. If that doesn't work then you can move on to sampling some energy boosting essential oils and learn if it works for you or not.

I'm afraid this isn't just a matter of eating energy boosting stuff. It's insufficient thyroid hormone because the body is attacking the thyroid like it's an enemy. I already get b12 shots.

In her case, it was like her thyroid was in overdrive all the time, which is very bad for your body. Hence the radioactive drink to kill some of it.

Whoa, auto-immune thyroid issues are complicated; why don't you try seeing a specialist via web chat or simply moving somewhere else?

I've moved here specifically because I need to be here for family. I am pursuing more medical help but on the internet there's a pile of scheistery stuff to wade through. I bought a book recently called Eat Dirt that talks about ways of reducing inflammation and reversing auto immune reactions and leaky gut.

That... really depends on the dirt. If you did that around here, you'd probably get iron poisoning but never suffer from anemia.

I have had some health issues for years. I think that it has to do with leaky gut, tired adrenals, liver overload, thyroid and lymphatic drainage and has resulted in several autoimmune conditions.

Before going on thyroid meds, would like to see what I can do with diet, exercise and anything else to affect the numbers and how I feel as thyroid meds are not a magic bullet, don't deal with the root cause, and have side effects like osteoporosis and hair loss.

I have friends who rave about essential oils and I I also have seen them avoid both anti depressants and antibiotics by using them. I am still skeptical, but think it stands to reason that different plants have useful properties. I also feel that a lot of western medicines serve as a bandaid but don't address what started the problem. I've kind of exhausted the help I can get from our medical system. However, I do worry thst the higher quality oils are a bit of a scan price wise and this is a bit of a fad.

Does anyone have experience with this? What is your opinion?

I'm sorry you're dealing with health issues.

I do not know how to handle thyroid issues, but I dealt with vertigo as well as leaky gut for a few years with no help from doctors as well as a specialist for allergies.

What I found to help with me as well as a series of health issues is apple cider vinegar. Google it if you have time.

Also a complex vitamin with magneisum, zinc, d3, and calcium helped me a great deal in the last year. I believe this vitamin combo is what fixed my leaky gut issue.

Also a change in diet could help. I've stopped eating wheat for almost a year now. I say that loosely because here and there I will eat bread, pizza, etc, but when I do I grow sick with tiredness, fatigue, muscle aches. I don't think I've got celiac, I just think I've become gluten intolerant like a ton of people are these days.

I also stopped drinking milk because at one time I thought the leaky gut was from dairy as well as my severe allergy problems.

Oils do help though. I've used peppermint to help with vertigo and sinus conditions, but I also have a cousin who had a thyroid issue and she grew very very sick until she got medication so don't wait too long, but do try other natural things.

I understand when someone wants to go natural. At one point in my life I was told I had a hormonal imbalance and for a female that brings on all sorts of menopausal issures. What I did above as well as yoga and exercise, I was able to control it but sometimes I do fall off the map because of stress or because I felt like eating something I shouldn't have

Thing with wheat is once I grt a taste my body craves it and sometimes I can't fight those cravings.

Seriously look into apple cider vinegar. The Braggs brand. It has the "mother" in it. It has helped with so many things I had going on and it detoxifies the liver so it is very good for people. The only ones that should be careful are those taking any sort of blood pressure medication as it lowers or stablizes someone's blood pressure.

I'm not sure where you live but there is a webite online that sells oils in bulk for cheap prices. They work very well. I was refered to it by a friend. If you're interested I can give you the link here or in pm.

I just joined the board and have been reading around...sorry I'm a few days late to this topic but I had a few comments. I certainly can understand your reticence to thyroid meds. I also don't think EO would hurt anything if you were interested in trying. It would definitely assist with your stress levels, which can play a huge role in overall health. You never know what the thing will be that makes a difference. I find them to be very beneficial, in my personal yet limited experience. Having said that, I wouldnt say EOs are any type of substitute for medication.

Regarding nutrition, have you looked Into The autoimmune protocol version of the Paleo diet? It is pretty intensive with food prep and food avoidance lists, but can prove to be helpful. "The Paleo Mom" (definitely google her - she's brilliant and very cool. She also had a great podcast if you aren't interested in wading through pages of science) I have a close friend who's wife is using it now for her low thyroid with success, in addition to the folks online who I've read about. I'm not a health care professional, but I have a lot of resources related to nutrition for immune system health, PM me if you want to get into the weeds. I won't tire everyone here with it. ;)

One last thought - I think it's less of an eastern versus western approach to medicine and more of a weave between the two. I think it's most viable to assess each as an method for health on a case by case basis.

Best wishes to you and your health!
