If we are obsessed we with our own unhappiness, we can't pay attention to anyone else.

This is so true. I've seen many many examples throughout my life. Personally, I see it as a big problem in society.

If we are obsessed with catering for our own happiness, we can't pay attention to others' unhappiness in the world.
If we are obsessed with making the unhappy happy, we can't pay attention to our own selfish unhappiness underneath.

Likewise, if we try to make everyone else happier, will never will be happy ourselves. And, if we are unhappy we are in no shape to help anyone else.
