What predominates reason or emotion? Is there balance and which are you predisposed?

"Our civilization is still in a middle stage, scarcely beast; in that it is no longer guided by instinct; scarcely human, in that it is not wholly guided by reason." Theodore Dreiser

"Rarely do you find men who willingly engage in hard, solid thinking. There is an almost universal quest for easy answers and half baked solutions. Nothing pains some people more than having to think." Martin Luther King Jr.

Reason should be the primary means of gaining facts. Intuitive wisdom comes into play with both inter-personal and intra-personal intelligence a la Howard Gardner's 'Multiple Intelligences.' In the intuitive realm we gain knowledge of self and others as well the world around us by our interactions with one another. That is the reason to keep a level head and dialogue with your stated position and disagree agreeably if necessary.

Affect and emotion are powerful and often people are more rationalising than reasoning, although reason is sounder than emotion in reaching judgements.

Judgements and judging are good when they are exercised rightfully.

Emotion is the guiding force for reason.
I would say instead that values are the guiding force for reason. Emotions are inputs, just like other sensory/sensate details of the circumstance.

Neither.

''Reason is, and ought only to be the slave of the passions, and can never pretend to any other office than to serve and obey them.''

It's onto something but reason and emotion are not the ones at odds. I like "nature" and "grace."

The dichotomy between reason and emotion is a false one.

Increasingly, I am drawn to the idea that reason/emotion rarely actually oppose each other in their purest forms, because one seems to have to do with motives for action/subjective preference, whereas the other has to do with knowledge, which can be argued and communicated to anyone and everyone.

They do oppose each other in a sense, which is to say if we restrict reason to its pragmatic (IMHO less "pure") counterparts, which have less to do with the acquisition of knowledge and more to do with the justification of one's actions, there's a conflict.
Notice that this occurs because they're now both aiming to operate on the same sphere, and one is dispassionate, and the other is not.
