Anyone take the Johnson O'Connor Aptitude Test?

Dude, WTF. I'd love to do it, just for the experience. Sounds fun. But you have to make multiple appointments, probably fly or drive to one of the centers each of the times, and pay $700.

How many people, practically, have the means to do that?

I sure as fuck don't.

I don't think it will help you on a resume, unless maybe you want to work at a testing center. It's supposed to tell you what you are or will be good at - as opposed to what you want to do. And that's the reason I wanted to hear from people who've actually taken the test - while it is pricey and it takes a few days to do but it's been around for over 10 years so someone's gotta be taking it.

So more answers! I wanna hear from someone who took this!

I've never taken an aptitude test of any kind, I do not know my aptitude at all. though if it wasn't 800 I'd considered taking this test, mostly because i'm totally lost about the future and what I want from it.

As a teenager, my parents forced me to take a massive aptitude test (can't remember the name of it) which was highly touted back then. What came of it was that I scored over 90% on all categories. Useless since it supposedly meant that I could do anything which isn't true at all. So for years, this has made me kind of cynical about aptitude tests in general.

I've taken aptitude tests before, but not that one. I don't get it, though. Once you reach a certain age with adequate life experience, shouldn't you already know what your abilities are?

It's kind of like when I take personality type tests... I already know what it will say, both good and bad. The surprises came aplenty when I didn't know myself... Now, I kinda think I got it all down.

It will go something like:

you are good at being a unicorn, a listener, a gatherer of glitter.

you are bad at being a bricklayer, a mechanic, or a teacher.

Cze Cze, did your friend's aptitude test truly point out her aptitudes or did it do what mine did, which IMO, was more of a feel-good confidence booster where thresholds were deliberately set low so people don't get their panties in a twist over not being able to do certain things well? If it was a feel-good one, it's counterproductive since it can easily put people into careers they won't excel at, considering others within this field and competitive edge.

In other words, did she score low and average on most categories?

Jenaphor, my friend highly recommended it with like glowing reviews and really encouraged me to take it. Didn't realize the price till I looked at the website. I'm guessing it didn't say she was good at everything...since she went the fine arts/artisan route. I did find 1 review about the test from a journalist and he did say it will tell you what you *aren't* good at and it reconfirmed his career choice (almost to the letter). And if he were younger/in a different phase it would have been reassuring/given direction.

In answer to your question Jag, I guess this test can tell you about hidden or underestimated aptitudes and prioritize your strengths. So you may think you are good at "art" but the test shows that you are actually best at moving physical objects around with your mind which lends itself to more careers than just the arts. Or something...

Bah, I just wanna take the test. In this economy maybe they'll have a fire sale or sumthin.

THe website is online but the test is administered over a couple days in person. I guess it's kinda like an IQ test in that they are testing your aptitudes.

I realize that this is a pretty old thread, but I would definitely say "yes" to taking the J-O'C test, most especially if you are having trouble deciding on what to study or are contemplating a career change. While the MBTI and similar tests are good at describing your personality, telling you "how" you probably like to do things, and identifying careers people with your personality type succeed in, it is only one piece of the puzzle. The "what" to do piece also goes to innate abilities that you are comfortable doing (or that your body/mind "wants" to do). Finally, I would add that the more things you think you might want to do or could do, the more you need the J-O'C. I took it when many of life's doors had already closed for me (this happens, despite what a lot of feel-good advisers like to tell you), and wish I had taken it as a much younger man.
