Because it feels good. It's cathartic. If you ignore what's making you sad, you repress it and that is known to cause problems. If you acknowledge it and feel it, you can move on.
The other night I was upset by something someone had said. I went for a walk and cried a little bit, then I felt great. It was put into perspective. If I had repressed those feelings, they would have turned into anxiety.
