Emotional absence is extraordinary. We can be physically present and emotionally absent.

It is hard to conceal our physical absence or presence. But it is child's play to conceal our emotional absence.

But most important an emotionally absent person has an advantage over an emotionally present person. For the emotionally present person is emotionally vulnerable while the emotionally absent person is not.

So no wonder we have so many emotionally absent ones here, as emotional absence gives one an advantage as well as protection.

This is why emotional absence is anti-social. And this is why emotional absence is ugly.

It's easy to spot the emotionally absent as they will do anything but relate to you emotionally. They will, for instance, play typing games with you. Or talk about your star sign. Or intellectualize. Or play the role of critic. But when you ask them to relate to you emotionally, they always have an excuse.

But worse, emotional absence is so socially accepted that it is rude to even comment on someone's emotional absence.

It is simply bad manners to draw attention to emotional absence.

And yet psychologists know emotional absence is neurotic.

So it is easy to conclude that we live in a neurotic society that seeks advantage and protection rather than relating emotionally.

And the people who suffer most are children who are dependent on emotional relating. But when they find the world doesn't respond to them emotionally, they seek to kill emotion within themselves.

And more, children see the emotionally armoured and aggressive eunuchs around them and naturally seek to imitate them.

And ineluctably children are proud when they have succeeded in becoming armoured and aggressive eunuchs themselves.

And in their peer groups they insist that everyone be emotionally absent, just like them.

And should anyone try to be emotionally present, they are ridiculed, and if they persist, they are socially excluded.

And so are the women and men around us formed by society.

Emotionally absent eunuchs.

I see it the opposite way. Some people tend to be very self centered and assume that their emotions are the only ones that matter. They want to bond with you now, so you must bond now, and in the way that they prefer to bond. Instead of taking the time to slowly develop a friendship over time, they expect an immediate emotional bond. They don't try engaging in pursuits that the other person is comfortable with (like typing or astrology or *gasp* intellectualism).

And when they don't get their immediate fix, they accuse others of being vacant or absent or eunuchs. But what you have to realize is that everyone has emotions that reveal themselves over time and cannot be forced. In addition, those people may be showing emotions in the way they know how and are not less than human because they don't show them in the way that you need to see them. Name calling doesn't help the cause and discourages sharing emotions.
