Test: Are you a perfectionist? | Psychologies

He who dares, wins

Your self-confidence allows you to set – and attain – ambitious goals. You certainly know how to be efficient. You know how to evaluate a task and invest the necessary time in order to accomplish it. Getting on with things makes you neither stressed, nor anxious or nervous. The apparent ease with which you do things conceals self-discipline, and can be disconcerting for others.

When your interests are threatened you will react quickly and won't hesitate to raise your voice, if necessary, to let others know they are overstepping the mark.

No one likes failure, but it doesn't knock you off course or make you question your actions because you know how to reconcile yourself to things.

Accustomed to speed and efficiency, and strengthened by self-esteem, you sometimes find it difficult to understand those who don’t function like you do, who lack self-assurance and who doubt their abilities. When faced with this sort of person you risk losing your patience and you might even see whether you can get them to do things your way.

It’s admirable what you demand of yourself when circumstances require it, but you might have to adapt the way you act so that you can march to the same tune as those around you, whether it’s at home or at work. After all, isn't it more important that the greatest number of people cross the finish line together as possible?

Slowly but surely wins the race

You never asked for the moon. You are sceptical about that sort of ambition. Everywhere around you there are people who seem obsessed with outperforming themselves. As far as you're concerned that's a dangerous pastime leading to stress, exhaustion and anxiety. Is it worth it? No. Life's too. You find it equally difficult to understand those who doubt themselves and their actions. For you life is more straightforward. Why complicate things? The secret of happiness is to do little, but do it well. It's about conserving your energy and using it in a timely way and wisely. Some people would criticise you for not taking many risks or for not questioning your own actions. You would answer calmly, ‘I accept myself the way I am and I am happy this way.’ Are you interested in what other people think of you? If the answer is no, you are perhaps missing a trick. It's not that you should be modelling yourself on others, but that you should allow a little of what they see into your field of vision, in the same way that light shining on a diamond shows its different facets.

Leave things to fate

You have learned to make your dreams and ambitions fit what you feel strong enough to do, which feels self-defeating. You sometimes think life is running away from you but you don't know how to change things. It often seems like other people, or circumstances themselves, make decisions for you. You would like to tackle things differently but you get the impression that what you think doesn't matter much anyway. You missed out on encouragement or compliments as a child. When you are given a special task your first reaction is that you won’t be able to do it. Although you believe you know yourself quite well, you only seem to focus on the negatives. Start by hushing that voice inside you that does nothing but criticise. When faced with a difficult situation, analyse the facts, then your own judgement, and then decide whether you are right to be thinking along those lines. Accept other people’s criticisms – you will soon see that they are often less harsh than the criticisms you make of yourself. If you are faced with an obstacle, allow yourself several goes at getting past it and look at the reasons behind why some attempts fail before you get discouraged. Learn to accept that, contrary to what we might think, our worth isn’t measured by our performance. Deep down, what’s important is what we are, not what we do.
