Is this kind of like when I was a teenager and when I walked past a bunch of pretty girls I'd get all self conscious and start to think I was walking funny?

Yap! But some of us still get that from time to time even past our teens.

Copious self-awareness can produce awkwardness. If you're giving a presentation to a crowd and you suddenly think "AUGH! I'm in front of 100 people!" your mind and motor skills will prove suddenly disappointing. Likewise with mate-spotting. Seeing someone alluring gives one a superdosage of self-consciousness. This OD leads to awkwardness, distraction, and bumbling fumbling maladroitness. Being human is never better than in these situations.
