The divided self enables us to deceive others and deceive ourselves. In the short run, the divided self enables us to survive and reproduce. In the long run, the price we pay for the success of the divided self is our spontaneity.

And it is our spontaneity that enables us to make authentic contact with others.

To gain power over others we divide and rule, in particular we divide the psyche of the subject into a divided self, a true self and a false self.

Interestingly, most of us are taken in by the false self of others, and as we respond to their false self, the true self withers.
