I mean, yes, this is the lot of humanity and always has been imo. I think it comes with being sentient and with having a penchant for believing there is 'something more' than 'just surviving' like the rest of the plant and animal kingdom. (not to say other animal species don't experience similar because it is possible some species do - or variants of it)

We all try to find that additional meaning and we all come up with different ways of doing it, or trying to attain it. Hence lots of philosophies, religions, beliefs throughout all of the years and cultures; different personal values, hobbies, actions, and attempts at moving beyond this feeling.

Edit: Also what ceecee said at the end.
"...On and on and on and on he strode, far out over the sands, singing wildly to the sea, crying to greet the advent of the life that had cried to him." - James Joyce

Sometimes I think we're all just jesters trying to play for an audience; except there is no audience, just more jesters. That does feel a bit desperate. But I jest.

    I like this.
I am The Cat; who walks by himself, and all places are alike to me...
The Cat is a fey, mercurial thing, given to fits of pique, moody silences, and eerie displays.

But it's just the price I pay
    Destiny is calling me
    Open up my eager eyes
    'Cause I'm Mr. Brightside...

In my impression I tend to see people leading lives of quiet desperation when they are trapped with someone who is not treating them very well. It can be an employer, family members, a significant other, etc. The more actually trapped they are with the people, the more desperate their lives. My earlier comments about sex and money are typically related to what makes people feel trapped with humans who hurt them. If everyone was super nice and tried to be Ducky Jesus all the time, then the world would be less quietly desperate.

Edit: In a general way I think a lot of people do have frustration about sex. There are a lot of single younger people with anger issues because they can't get laid. There are many sexless or nearly sexless marriages that people don't want to ruin or hurt. I think a lot of people aren't having sex because it's difficult to make it happen.
Is this such a bad thing?
I've been called a criminal, a terrorist, and a threat to the known universe. But everything you were told is a lie. The truth is, they've taken our freedom, our home, and our future. The time has come for all humanity to take a stand...

Not if it's how an individual prefers life. I believe there to be a correlation between sexual suppression and aggression in cultures, broadly speaking. It has to do with channeling basic instinctual drives especially during the years people are flooded with hormonal impulses. Large scale I think it tends to be a problem, but on the individual level it can be anything from ideal to a life of quiet desperation. The individual variation possible in humanity is interesting in and of itself.

One thing I learned is that everybody has a story, and in every story is a sad chapter.
A lot of my friends and relatives are of have been suffering from depression. Even the seemingly happiest ones. And that made me wonder how many people are truly, deeply happy.
