Purely from my own point of view, merging is taking the needs, wants, emotions, etc of someone else and having them be amplified in importance. It's like limerence. It's having that person at the forefront of one's mind and heart. It's considering them as or more important than one's self. It's taking that person on in ways that replace parts or fill in empty parts of one's self. It's total love, with all that entails.

I don't think it's at odds with Fi, at all. Not just anyone is merged with. Whoever is merged with, has passed that Fi test, which is not an easy thing to do.
