Was wondering if anyone can relate to this, but I've found a bicyclic pattern of going from 5w4 to 5w6, spending about two years in each. While what this means in typology terms is up for debate, there are two main modes I can operate in, the "5w4" mode tends to be more brooding, very abstract and neglecting in practical real world, my intellectual interests become more nebulous and philosophical and a lot of time spend dealing with existentialist nihilism.

The 5w6 mode is more neurotic but less depressed and my intellectual interests and my conceptual thought is applied to the processes and technical details of systems. I of course am still a procrastinator but it shifts towards productive procrastination like doing convoluted linux server set ups when I should be studying etc. While the 5w4 mode is still quite anxious and somewhat paranoid about the 'dangers' of the big bad world, the cognition takes the form of just "it's all futile, why do anything", more indifference, while the 5w6 mode seeks to find information and enumerate the threats in the environment and mitigate them if possible, things like charging lithium batteries start worrying me so I am unable to leave them unattended (best practice but most people don't care enough). Also, I begin to get anxious about my bad habits etc, like bad sleep, generally bad cognitions etc, with the 5w4 mode, there is this counterphobic negativstic elevation of having bad emotional and spiritual health, almost trying to seek the Elliot Mr Robot-esque rubicon and mental autolysis because "crazy is at least interesting", where is in the 5w6 mode, I'm more anxiously counterphobic, I become aware of the self destruction, still think and act is unproductive ways, but doing so with lament.

At the start of this year, I've began to shift into the 5w6 mode, so far it has been quite positive because I'm a lot more productive, both practically and intellectually.

Just curious to hear anyone's opinions or experiences

I think people have elements of both, and whether you feel one is stronger than the other is up to you.

In your case, everything you've described is 5w6. Mr. Robot's Elliot is a 5w6.

The way I experience my wing is sort of odd. Firstly, 9 is the enneagram I relate to the least. It's so alien to me, and is basically my inverse. 2 I really don't relate to all that much, only a little. Because of this I feel more "pure 1" than anything in that regard. Nevertheless, I am clearly 1w2 by virture of the fact that I don't relate to 9 at ALL. As such, I do not experience wing flipping since it's solidly locked to one side.

I have witnessed that I have utilised the other subtype at my point Point:9. I know I utilise it in my tritype.

What about when your worked up, intense, angry, stubborn of mind, singles mined, steadfast, resistant single mined and unyielding?

Objectively focused, clear minded with content In context while working the synergetic principle of getting things done with other and for others to sustain or generate continued evolutionary proactive advancements?

I'm with Hard here on the wing thing. I don't relate to type 8 at all. It's the type that I relate the absolute least to. I also think my 1 wing is fairly strong, but not strong in the sense of a core 1. Thus 9w1 fits pretty solidly with me, and I don't think I can or will ever flip to 9w8, with how drastically I just don't relate to 8.

My 6 fix's wing is meh. I don't relate to either 5 or 7 all that much, but 7 fits better than 5 does.

My 2 fix, again, has no wing flipping. I don't relate to 3 at all. The enneagram types I relate the least to are 8, 3, and 7 in that order (although I do still think 6w7 > 6w5 for myself). And since I think my 1 as a wing is pretty heavy enough with my 9, it just makes sense to me that I'd be very 2w1 > 2w3.

So, no wing flipping here. Maybe Amargith has something interesting to say about this, since she's a 4 double wing?

No real difference? I'm still me and still my type.

"Theoretically" and "makes sense" are startling phrases, but I'm using them anyway. Because, screw it; we're talking theory.

Sure, "shifting wings" can be a way to describe shifts in thought patterns, demeanor, etc.

Character and Neurosis places the Enneatypes on the circle in a way that maps a "gradient" from neurosis to neurosis. Think color wheel:

From that perspective, it makes sense that a Green would relate at least to Cyan and Yellow, because on the spectrum it sits smack dab in the middle of them. And some days, you as a Green might feel a bit Chartreuse. Others, a bit Aquamarine. So.. 8w9 or 8w7 depending on where the breeze blows.

Although some don't relate at all to one of their adjacent types. Yellow might be foreign to a Green. If an 8 doesn't relate to 9 at all, theoretically they could be described pretty well as either 8w7 or 7w8.

(There are many, many circumstances in which all of that can break down. But hey, it makes sense!!)

Err, I'll try...I don't switch between them for long extended period of times, rather, the situation triggers them and determines which 'tactic' I go for.

Like, for instance on here, I get typed a lot '4w3' because its..well, its a socialising place. While I originally came here with a 4w5 purpose (knowledge and self-reflection), it became a place where I could platform, perform, socialise, build a 'persona' (for fun) and become successful in networking. It also allowed me to goof off, lose my drive to do anything, procrastinate and waste my day here(9 disintegration...), while building solid bonds and learning from others how to stick to something, vet something properly, and stand together (6 integration).

Meanwhile, when I'm on my own or dealing with a situation I don't know what to do with, I very much go 5 on the whole 'must absorb as much information as possible *now*'. I overresearch, get paranoid I haven't got every angle covered and I get scared about actually *doing* something, becoming a master of avoiding that anxiety (7 disintegration). Nowadays, Ive finally figured out exactly what kind of research I need to feel safe enough to go ahead and how to do it step by step so I have time to explore and figure things out one thing a time as I steadily move forward(integration into 8).

Most of my life at home is working from home, so I live a hermit lifestyle - weird for an extrovert, I know (and I do suffer bouts of cabin fever because of it). It's spent in 4w5 mode. Once I go out to socialise though, 4w3 comes out ;)

I've come across writings (Richard Rohr?) that claim wing not only can, but often does shift, in later life (age 40+).
It makes sense to me, when you consider the energy patterns that change with tertiary and inferior development.
I was solidly planted in 6w7. Didn't begin to see my 5-ish traits come out until, coincidentally, the tertiary arose.

Blue-hair input is needed.
