Anyone seen this yet? I think it's pretty good. Equal parts comedy and tragedy; sort of an unconventional biography. Republicans would hate it. I thought Christian Bale had the mannerisms down pat. Steve Carrel is trying for something different and more parodic rather than evoking Rumsfeld, but it happens to be funny.

I think my one criticism was that certain parts of the ending were a bit much.

I won't see it in the theater, and I don't really care much about Dick Cheney.

I think if I see it, it'll be for the work of Sam Rockwell and Christian Bale.

I don’t understand your warning, as if I would go into a film of that sort without expecting there to be some sort of slant.

Some people might?

It was interesting for me because part of it covered a period of time when I was the most politically involved. Dick Cheney was at the center of all that. Revisiting that was an interesting experience that stirred up a lot of emotions for me.

The one criticism I have is that it appears to make W look even more like the duh/too dumb to do any of this than he did prior and that was already too much. No one in that administration deserves rehabilitation.

\Maybe? I do rmember a friend of my sister complaining after seeing the movie W because he'd been given the impression from the trailers that it was more along the lines of a zany comedy. Not sure why anyone would expect a cookie cutter zany comedy from Oliver Stone, but I guess we can blame marketing and editing.

Maybe this will be hard for some to believe but that was actually the period when I was most politically active and outspoken (roughly from 2000-2012), so I do hold a weird nostalgia for that period and the political actors. I was hugely anti-Bush, yet somehow nostalgia has colored my impression of the period and I really enjoy any media dramatizing or documenting that period. It's interesting to see these sorts of films and books coming about now that time has passed and we've entered the appraisal stage.

In fairness, and I'm not trying to defend or excuse Bush II, that's sort of what he was during his tenure. I don't think he was ever as dumb as his critics really made him out to be, but I do think he was more than happy to leave the architecting of major policy to his staff and advisors. That's not a reason to forgive or rehabilitate his public image, if anything he should be criticized for being too passive and letting blokes like Rumsfeld and Cheney pull the strings.

I'm inclined to agree with you on that last sentence.

I honestly find the appraisal really frustrating. I don't think the Trump administration has yet to surpass the Dubya administration in terms of sheer awfulness. If Trump goes to war with Iran, I may revise that.

I think his tone and rhetoric make him worse than bush in the eyes of many people. The fact that many see him as a major enabler for racist groups in the USA. But I don’t know. I won’t really know who’s worse until 2025, unless Trump does something especially fucked up before that like start world war 3.

When people start going on about - have you ever seen a worse politician than Trump?? my answer is always - Yes. Dick Cheney and it isn't even close.
