Default Roseanne Cancelled because of tweet

    Well, that didn't take long.

‘Roseanne’ Canceled by ABC After Roseanne Barr’s ‘Repugnant’ Comments, Network President Says

ABC has canceled “Roseanne” after Roseanne Barr’s racially charged tweet about Valerie Jarrett Monday morning.

“Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show,” ABC entertainment president Channing Dungey said in a statement to TheWrap on Tuesday.

“muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj,” Barr said earlier on Tuesday in response to a Twitter thread about Jarrett, a former adviser to Barack Obama...

The “Roseanne” star’s tweet caused swift backlash on Twitter, and consulting producer Wanda Sykes said she would not be returning to the sitcom on Tuesday morning. Executive producer and co-star Sara Gilbert said that Barr’s comments are “abhorrent and do not reflect the beliefs of our cast and crew or anyone associated with our show.”..
Aside from politics, I think the Internet/Twitter has been notorious for people shutting off their brains and saying stuff that would never fly in a public face-to-face. Which doesn't help. Not that Roseanne wouldn't have said it anyway, she never cared what people thought anyway...

I did think it would take a bit longer though... but then we live in interesting times I suppose...
    With all due respect,

The really weird thing is that Fox and others are pushing to have the show reinstated and/or done elsewhere.

That in itself is not weird, the thing is that a lot of the cast has already agreed with the decision and/or think it was understandable and/or had already quit / was planning to quit over it... so what aspect of the show is left to bring back? Unless you just have Roseanne on a completely new show with a new cast?

I've read that in the newspapers and although I understand why the show was cancelled, I'm still a bit disappointed. To be honest Roseanne never has been my favourite show but it was interesting enough. So, there's that. She's quite nuts though. Wtf.

    Hard to believe:

Never been a big fan of the classic sitcom format but I always enjoyed Roseanne, partly because it's one of the few shows that's ever really captured the working class without seeming like parody or it was written as a network TV exec's idea of the working class.

I don't really know what's happened to her, she used to be a socialist, then she jumped on the Trump train. At first, I thought it must all be part of an act for her, that she was trying to get everyone convinced of her conservatism only to subvert those expectations, but I guess this latest tweet would suggest otherwise. Either that, or people took her too seriously and it was all part of her act.

I'm a little bummed, particularly for all of the people involved in working on the series who will lose jobs because of her.

I've never seen or acknowledged Roseanne outside of the context of the show. I've maybe seen 3 minutes of the reboot. I was surprised to find that she said that and even more surprised to find out that this isn't new from her.

Needless to say, her tweet wasn't okay. However, I'm not sure how I feel about canceling the show. On one hand, companies require their employees to uphold a positive image on social media and I think this single tweet is enough to be seen as a thorough violation of that. On the other hand, there's a lot of good people who just lost a job because of her. I mean, you can't really kill off the titular character without killing the whole show in one way or another, but there's still a sense of "wow, you blew it for everyone". What I would like is for ABC to allow the rest of what has been made to air and then to offer the rest of the cast and crew an opportunity to make a new show. Reboots are cheap cash grabs to begin with, making this an opportunity for new original content could be for the better. (If this is or isn't already happening, please correct me. I know the show is canceled but I don't know the exact details of it.)

Roseanne can't keep her story straight about the tweet either. First it was just a bad joke, then it was drug induced nonsense, then she didn't even realize it could be offensive because she didn't know Valerie's race, I definitely don't feel bad for Roseanne, just her coworkers. Any "the tweet wasn't that bad, rehire her" argument to me is worrisome and the people who specifically want the show to get picked up and relaunched by a conservative network is extra concerning. I'm not exactly a fan of Fox, but pretty fucked up how you see a lady being racist and your first instinct is to push her onto Fox's payroll.

Furthermore, is it really a political move to fire someone who for being racist? Is tackling racism a partisan issue? I know there's been a lot of people saying there's a double standard but haven't seen examples of ABC specifically holding a double double standard.

I did see the suggestion, made right after the cancellation was announced, that the show itself continue but without the actress herself. Not a bad idea, as there was obviously interest in it.

    Yeah, not a bad idea.

I'm just not sure how the rights and stuff work -- for example, if they keep everyone but her, she might still be making money off it without working on the show due to licensing/IP ownership or whatever, and people probably aren't keen on that.

I mean, I'm sure they'd love to keep Dan Goodman and Laurie Metcalf working.

I am/was pretty fascinated with Barr, she's a survivor, has been through a lot in life and is interestingly and tragically outspoken and also very admittedly suffers from mental illness. The show itself seemed like a great potential place to have some good conversations about the times, like an All in the Family of this era. It's a shame she went off the rails, ABCs decision to cancel the show was sensible from a business point of view, and isn't that what's really important here, Disney's survival?

Well, if Disney goes down, no one will be able to stop Amazon.
