I'm not really talking about not knowing what prison is like- it's broader than that. The pain of losing a friend or family member in the way they lost Poussey, and having it be SO familiar and routine, is a specific kind of pain we'll never understand. It is not a part of our cultural experience.

yeah... prison is it's own kind of culture (and jail is an even different culture than prison, since there you don't get a job and you don't get to go outside ever and you get no visitors... and in lockup you only get one phone call and can't leave your cell or take a shower)... and in a way it's closer to the type of things that you hear on the news from war zones than the type of life that the average american ever leaves

I think, in a way though, that having someone die on the show in that manner was a shock to everyone as opposed to a familiar thing and in part that might bring back some balance to the overall dynamics there... the guards are going to have to back off some and the prisoners might let down their hackles after a while, but it'll be tough since she was one of the inmates more willing to cross race lines and include others so she had a lot of people who did know her. something happened that there's no coming back from and there will be a lot of people feeling angry, feeling guilty and feeling a need to find someone to blame and that never makes for a good situation. inmates are supposed to be safe from that situation in jail, at least safer than the average inmate there would have been were they still living their lives that led them to getting arrested... and that was contract of sorts was completely ripped up and tossed aside there. sure many of the inmates might have expected family members or friends to die a violent death outside of jail living a life of crime, but in jail they should have been safe... and she wasn't

Ahah, you articulated that extremely well. The "slimy" bits of him that pop up every now and then are the driving fuel for my anger, I'd have to say. I don't hate him (and if I did, it would be a lot more mild compared to some other characters) but... to be the least specific I can be, at least until you finish most and if not the entire season, he doesn't use the power he has to his full ability. How much "power" he has is still debatable because as [MENTION=360]prplchknz[/MENTION] said, the situation is getting more and more corrupted by MLC (lol there's also Judy King but) so the label of "warden" sort of becomes irrelevant. Not completely, of course, but little by little it becomes more evident.

Just finished the season.

I think that's the big thing about Caputo- he COULD do something, but he's weak. He talks big about respecting the prisoners and changing the system, and he has a certain amount of power to do something about it, but did he pick up the fucking phone and call the cops? No, he waited for the corporate assholes to get their angle first, because they cut his checks. When it comes right down to it, he's covering his own ass. And then when he does the press conference, he takes a stand, but it's for Wonder Years, not the inmates. It's just frustrating because he seems to "get it" to a certain degree. That's the point- "getting it" isn't enough.

Re: Caputo

All of you guys in this thread seem to be missing something about him in this thread. He is trapped. Yeah, he is bending to MCC's ways because they give him his paycheck. But would you not do the same thing? Here is why I understand what he is doing:

1. It seems like this is the only job he has seemed to have that was worth a damn. Do you think he could easily just pick up his feet and be able to support himself after being fired from such an influential company? It's easy to say that all of you here would do the right thing without actually being in such a situation. We've seen what has happened to the previous guards...they are working as busboys, crossing guards, etc. How easily could you throw your entire career away for these things? Yes, it's the right thing to do, but it's more difficult than you are making it appear to be.

And perhaps MOST importantly (the non-selfish reason)...

2. Ok, suppose he does the right thing and MCC fires him. Then what? He can't do a SINGLE thing to make a difference if he doesn't work there anymore, people! Do you know who would likely be in charge? Piscatella or some rando from MCC. Do you think that they would "do the right thing?" Do you think they would at all think of the inmates as anything other than subhuman shitstains? Caputo NEEDS to stay in this position to at least have a remote chance of changing anything, and he knows that. Sadly, Caputo is not as cunning as some of the other characters on the show like Red. He is an average Joe that wants to do right, but can't. He is stressed out as fuck and isn't able to find the loopholes.

I am not saying that Caputo is perfect. He definitely is not. But you CANNOT make him out to be the bad guy here. No one is perfect. He is trying and he is just plain trapped.

The big thing that I am worried about with him is that he will give up. There has just been so much going on that I have no idea how he has made it even this far. I wouldn't have been able to make it myself.

What really got me was when Caputo tried to confront one of the guards (Humphrey, right?) and Piscatella basically shut him down. That really showed how powerless Caputo has become in this situation. Scary. I feel like he's not really running things around Litchfield, simply because he can't. It's out of control.
