I rather enjoyed Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and The Dubliners. I guess I will read Ulysses at some point. Finnegans Wake? I don't think so. Even the bars named after it are ponderous and hateful.

Finnegan's Wake is glorified white ebonics.

Nobody really thinks James Fenimore Cooper was good, do they?

One would assume 'yes' but one would be wrong. Grossly wrong.

Have you ever read Mark Twain's hilarious diatribes against Cooper? I laughed so hard I cried.

SO agree with Tyler Perry. Good call, FM. He doesn't even do that schtick as well as Martin Lawrence. What does THAT say about him?

I also wish to defend the honor of Citizen Kane. I think it's one of those movies that's every bit as good as its reputation proclaims it to be. Admittedly, not everyone likes the same thing. Part of what makes it a great movie is the fact that Welles did some groundbreaking camera angles and directing choices that changed cinema thereafter. I watched a movie called RKO 281, about Welles and how he made that movie, and then immediately afterward attended a showing of CK on the big screen in NYC. (I think it was an HBO-made thing, with Liev Scrieber.) First of all, it's a completely different movie when you see it as it's meant to be seen. It completely envelops you, because of the mood he creates right from the beginning. But having some insight into the things that he did that no one else had done before him, and the things he had to fight to do to even get the movie made? It really tranforms the experience. I'm not saying you have to like it, but it doesn't suck.

Wii. It would have been so much better with Xbox 360 hardware.

You know, it took me 2 or 3 watches before I really appreciated Citizen Kane. Now I agree that it's genius (although it would not crack my Top 5 Greatest American Films; Top 10, yes). I actually don't think it matters as much to see it on the big screen, though, since it was shot in 1.33:1. It's in its normal aspect ratio on TV. I did see it on the big screen once, and it was a great experience, but mostly for the tremendous sound in a brand-new theater.

I can totally see why some people hate Sin City, even though I liked it.

The Godfather
Snoop Dogg
Ooh, The Godfather, ouch. Methinks The Godfather made you think of The Doggfather, hence Snoop Dogg.

I think it's just a matter of what different people value in a film. You've consistently demonstrated that production values and visual effects are the primary means by which you judge a film. In that case, Batman and Robin would be a natural choice over The Dark Knight, because it was visually showier. I think the people that prefer The Dark Knight value storytelling, subtext and a restrained but well-defined visual style. I think it's unfair to the film to tie its popularity to the Heath Ledger situation, although I agree that his untimely death has caused people to view his body of work through rose-colored glasses.

Regarding this whole Batman thing... I believe that it all depends on whether one reads the Batman comics or has a sort of outsider's view of Batman.

After Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns" and the various reboots/reincarnations of the Batman universe, its characters, its overall tone and aesthetic, all those changes precipitated in the 80's and 90's (think "Knight Falls" and Elseworld series, etc. etc.) Batman became something altogether different from what he was in the 50's, 60's, and 70's... the essential antisocial vigilantism, the essence of a lone man struggling against the world was obviously maintained, but its presentation was completely different. It became darker and much more brooding... Batman's struggles with Superman or even Judge Dredd are alien to people raised on Adam West...

I think the Animated Series was an excellent bridge for both aesthetics...

Thus, it would seem to me that people who prefer the Schumacher films aren't avid readers of comics from the mid-eighties forward... they see Batman more as what he was in early comics and the old Adam West TV series... KAPOW! BAM! <crazy jazz trumpets sound> A Joker who's more mischievously evil than psychotically evil...

Generally, I've found almost all serious readers of Batman comics from the last two decades or so are heavily in favor of the Nolan and Burton films... non-current fan(atic)s prefer the shtick of Schumacher.

Schumacher's Batman movies are shit, I thought that was general knowledge. I've read some 80s Batman books, but only after falling in love with Burton's film.

For the thread: The movie 300 sucks.

The Big Lebowski was/is a brilliant film.

It is one of the only movies I've ever seen that actually took me several times of viewing before I got/understood all of the brilliant intricacies!!!

Those who didn't or don't get the movie, are either idiots, or need to watch it again before they judge.

Now....

Crash, the 2004 Haggis "film" WAS AN OFFENSIVELY HORRIBLE, INACCURATE, CONTRIVED, "RACISM FOR DUMMIES" PIECE OF OVERRATED SHIT!!!! All those who liked/appreciated that movie are either morons, racists, or ignorant.
