Can't we just define music as a series of stimuli producing effects intended to produce a signal to the psyche by means of a persons auditory organs and be done with it?

Why complicate things?

Thats not logic...whats wrong with you :D

Perhaps because certain genres of "music" lack melody.

Ha, like a speech...which would qualify under my definition but is definitely not music.

How about "anything that is honestly intended to be understood as music by another human being" is music.

Even if you end up not understanding it. The key is the intention (and the honesty of intention).

Metallica is not metal. I'm talking about screeching or growling into the microphone.

Listen to my link. Growling, yes it's in there but all things considered, it's a pretty good song, no?

It's not fair to lump metal in with the argument that rap isn't music. Metal bands play all their instruments the same way any band does. A lot of it is very technical musically as well. Most of your real metal (I'm not talking about that crap you hear on the radio) is rooted in classical music.

Um...that's what I've been trying to get at.

there is shit in all genres. Not all metal is shit, not all rap is shit. But there is shit out there. And some people like shit...either because they don't have the auditory perception to understand it's shit, or because they know someone in the band...lol

Ok, based on what I found on you tube, that is definitely not black metal. Or good. Lol one song kinda sounded like a punk band trying to cover death metal...which is...um, unique...?

Interesting, because Bathory is widely considered the pioneer of black metal.

Since rap was brought up rap as a comparison...

usually they will not only use tone but they also use the pauses, and speed as the "musical" part. Instead of frequency being tone like singing, frequency would be speed of the words when it comes to rap.

Not really surpassed per se, as Bathory was part of first wave black metal, which is pretty different from second wave, which is the 'typical' black metal sound (early Burzum/Satyricon/Enslaved/etc.). They are both great in their own ways.

I think it's pretty annoying that people who think metal (extreme metal in particular) isn't music, they don't realize the talent it takes to properly do various styles of harsh vocals (as in without wrecking your voice and being consistent in each range, some of them have been doing vocals like that for 20+ years and even sound better than ever at this point), use non-major scale melodies (cause you know, anything other than major scale isn't 'real melody' according to them), have songs longer than 3-4 minutes (even up to 10-20 minutes or longer) without typical verse/chorus structure that aren't super predictable and even use non-3/4 or 4/4 time that requires an attention span greater than a goldfish to understand, and so on. Complex/minimalistic structure != no structure. My roommate in college who was like this even said it's not possible for the musicians to remember how to play everything live, like music from bands like Suffocation, Necrophagist, and Augury, that was so laughable cause they are all pretty much flawless live. :rofl1:

Stuff like this would be the antithesis of music to people like that.

http://www.myspace.com/gaza (this is more grindcore-ish but fits with the others in being non-music lol)
Deathspell Omega (especially on Fas - Ite, Maledicti, in Ignem Aeternum, that's their most chaotic/obscure one)

And then of course there's the more atmospheric stuff that's also 'not music' like these.

In my opinion, music is anything the listener decides to interpret as music OR anything a musician makes with the intent of it being music. All in perception.

Of course it is. Whether you like it personally or not is irrelevant.

Basically what Folderol said.

It may be skillfully produced noise, but I wouldn't call that music. "Music" by my definition has some kind of harmony and pleasant sound to it. Preferably with a good beat that makes me want to move. I do consider rap music for all of these reasons.
