Fifty shades of grey....

Another scathing review.

Like Bella in Twilight, the protagonist in Fifty Shades feels frumpy, dumpy, and entirely unworthy. Ana Steele in Fifty Shades is one of the "little people below." Christian Grey, the twerp of this sorry business, is way too beautiful for her, and his beauty justifies however he may want to hurt her. She is unworthy of the perfect one -- that man over there with straight teeth and crooked desires. If a man hurts you, then what did you expect? Isn't he worth it? And did you deserve any different? Haven't you finished the Twilight series yet?

"I don't want to lose him. In spite of all his demands, his need to control, his scary vices, I have never felt as alive as I do now. It's a thrill to be sitting here beside him. He's so unpredictable, sexy, smart, and funny. But his moods... oh -- and he wants to hurt me" (Fifty Shades, p. 259).

Yeah, well, there's that. "Other than that, how was the play, Mrs. Lincoln?"

It is all there, just like Twilight -- the moodiness that keeps the woman off balance, the aggression that makes her blame herself, the straight teeth, the deadliness, the desire to hurt. Christian Grey doesn't sparkle though. Not even in the dialogue.

I enjoyed the books, so much so that i read all 3 in 5 days. I enjoyed it for the sex scenes (the red room of pleasure sounds like a blast) but also from a psychological viewpoint. You can see why the bloke had such control issues. There are supposed to be 3 more books coming out later this year from Christians perspective and there are talks of a film. Whoever plays Christian better have a hot body although i'm sure he won't measure in comparison to my fantasies.

How do the books compare to other erotica?

I can't figure out why this one in particular got so popular.

I totally thought of this guy in the role of Christian, even before I read that review posted earlier that featured an animated gif of him:

It reminds me of "My Immortal", the modern-day classic Harry Potter fan fiction with racy lines like "Then he put his thingie into my you-know-what and we did it for the first time."

Well these books are 'mommy porn' apparently so cater to a broad range of women (??) Maybe it's escapism from their mundane lives (hmmm, i ain't getting no sex so i jump into fiction to get my kicks) I think it got popular because of the media. I finally jumped on the bandwagon about a week after the huge hype. In comparison to other stuff, i've read some pretty shit erotica .. I get turned off the moment i hear "and out he pulled the trojen condoms" .. Of course, lol.

I saw Fifty Shades of Grey at the bookstore, didn't know what it is about and out of curiosity read the first three pages. It was so badly written (I immediately felt like punching the Ana character for being such a shallow twerp) that I put the book back. I only realised later that it is about BDMS, but even if I was interested in that I wouldn't be able to get myself to read 50 Shades because of the bad writing.

Says it all I think.

And I sure hope Cillian Murphy does NOT play Christian Grey in the movie, I would have to weep.

I hate it. I've changed my mind totally. At first I was hopeful that he would corrupt and destroy this pathetic Ana, but seriously the sex just gets more and more boring and just disappointing.
It's some weird cross between some lovey romance shit and sone kind of action/kidnap/stalker plot, with a bit of child abuse and paedophilia and drug abuse just mentioned in passing so as to liven it up a bit.

It's doing my head in and I've had to struggle to make it as far as I have done (nearly finished the third now) so as to have a valid opinion on it.

I think the massive appeal must be to women with unsatisfactory marriages who wish some beautiful controlling man with a helicopter, big dick and handcuffs would whisk them away from their dull sexless existence.

This. I totally think this is the answer. They never stop to think that they could possibly control the content of their own sex life, minus the terrible literature. And now, people are going to run out and buy handcuffs. I do hope they consider purchasing bolt cutters as well. You know, before they have to drive to the fire station wearing a towel someday.

Hahahaha!

I am studiously avoiding all mention of the book let alone reading it. But that made me LOL. I'm assuming Ana is the main character?

Damn, the lengths stars will go to in order to be seen as "serious actors" and "real adults" At least she won't be having implied sex with a horse.

I haven't read them. I read a couple of excerpts, and thought they were so appallingly badly written that I wouldn't bother. Life is too short and there are too many underappreciated authors who can actually write for shit. :coffee:

I don't understand. Isn't there all kinds of soft-core erotic fiction online? Some of it probably as well or even better written than this? Can't people just read that for free?

Hermione Granger is going to play Ana in the upcoming movie.

I won't lie: That Emma Watson is an attractive young lady. They're trying to trick me into have even the smallest level of interest in seeing that damn movie.

That stuff is hardly accessible to the masses and carries a semi-legitimate stamp of "actual literature, not just porn". Much like men who claimed to read Playboy for the articles.

I was intrigued by the runaway success of these books and various acquaintances of mine lauding it on Facebook, considering what it was. I found a copy of the pdfs.

As I expected from the ridiculous quotes and excerpts floating around, and the reviews, the writing is appalling, and the characterisation laughable. I've read far better fanfiction written by teenagers (not that I've delved into the Twilight realm of that).

So it seems EVERYONE is talking about these fifty shades books, so I felt it would be rude not to check them out. Currently flying through the first one. Although they are no great work of literature I am finding myself addicted to the sex.

So......
Have you read them?
What did you think?
Why do you think this is the first erotic fiction book to go HUGE?
(a couple of my friends who have particularly dull sex lives read it and loved it)
Do you think there will be a massive increase in people getting involved in the BDSM scene?

I am loving this book (ok so everytime I read 'my inner goddess' I cringe but I'm willing to forgive that) but then I love sex. I'm curious to know why this particular work of erotica has such universal appeal?

I read a little of it. What I read was pretty damn entertaining. I may even read the whole thing one day.

I was working on the floor of the Ann Summers warehouse last June... And I saw Fifty Shades a Grey, and I didn't think too much of it, then this thing got popular.
