As a child (elementary and middle school), I listened to Paula Abdul, Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey and Amy Grant. In middle-high school, Smashing Pumpkins, Bush, Soul Asylum, Oasis... basically 90s alternative/grunge.

I didn't really get into music until I was older. The whole grunge thing was happening when I was a teen, and so was a lot of foundational hip-hop. Also for some reason, the barrio was all about the Oldies.. maybe it was some sort of La Bamba thing going on. But the only time I really listened to music was when I snuck into my brother's bedroom and listened to his Pink Floyd, Metallica and Butthole Surfer albums. Or I listened to Motown on my friend's dad's reel to reel player.

As a kid I listened mostly to whatever popular song was currently playing on the radio. My chidhood spanned the 80s and 90s, so that's what I listened to. In my late teens and college years, I started to branch out more and started listening to more classic rock and oldies from the 60s, jazz, and yes, showtunes.

Any 60s and 70s era music that happened to be playing on the top 40s station.

As a child, I worshipped Michael Jackson. Nobody else mattered.

In the early teen years, it was all about Rap and Heavy Metal.
Metallica, Guns-N-Roses, Poison, Motley Crue, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, DIO, and Van Halen, etc.
RUN-DMC, The Beastie Boys, MC Hammer, and Vanilla Ice.

Then in my late teens it was Rap/Hip-Hop, Classic Rock, Punk, and Alternative.
Wu Tang, Fugees, Beastie Boys, Dr. Dre, Snoop, A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, etc.
Hendrix, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, the Stones, the Doors, the Velvet Underground, etc.
Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cure, The Sex Pistols, Ramones, Joy Division, The Pixies, Jane's Addiction, and a bunch of obscure punk and "experimental" bands.

Then in my 20s, I got really into the whole Rave scene, and all kinds of electronic music.
Techno, Trance, IDM, Drum-n-Bass, Dubstep, etc.

Now, in my 30s, I still like most of the same music--except for the Heavy Metal and some of the Rap.

From 6-8 some euro dance
9 prodigy
From prodigy i moved to metallica and liked stuff like sepultura, slayer and stuff like that, also like alot this finnish band waltari combining metal and dance.
From around 11 to 12 eminem, cypress hill, nas etc.
From that i went back to metal(sepultura, slipknot(i dont consider early stuff as nu metal)) and nu metal(korn, limb bizkit), but also listened to some hip hop(same type as before) and reggae(mainly finnish).
Dropped the nu metal crap somewhere around 15 and started also listening some psy trance(infected mushroom, hallucinogen) and rock(queens of the stone age, kingston wall, ozric tentacles).

My sister's albums, basically classic rock. Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, etc.

I was embarrassed to admit I liked Madonna. But I did. And other pop.

Then late 80's and early 90's country was pretty amazing....All those guys, especially Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Brooks and Dunn, and John Anderson. I miss C&W dancing.

In order that they came into my life as a significant interest:

Sweet, Abba
ELO, 10CC
Cheap Trick, Kiss, Cars
Ultravox, U2
Dio, Black Sabbath
Motley Crue, Motorhead, Def Leppard, Cult,
Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax
Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Living Colour, Fishbone
Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden
Smashing Pumpkins
Live
Linkin' Park
Megadeth (reprise thanks to teenage son discovering them via Guitar Hero)

Of late, much of my purchasing has been of older bands back catalogues and compilations - bands that I enjoyed at the time but not enough to really get into back then:

The Cure
Led Zeppelin
Van Halen
Cat Stevens
Alice in Chains
Aerosmith

I'm assuming "as a kid" to mean early teen years when kids first get into music.

Genesis
The Police
Duran Duran
Yes
J. Geils Band
Def Leppard
Asia
Hall and Oates
Billy Joel
Van Halen

...and a whole lotta Motown from riding in the car with my parents. Still love it :)

From 6(?) to about 12 years old

TLC - Waterfalls <--- probably one of the few songs I can truly remember at about 6 years old.
Mariah Carey - Always Be My Baby
Sugar Ray - Fly
Smash Mouth - Allstar <--- This one is big.... really big.... before they used it for Shrek big. When fox was actually a good channel to watch big.
Celine Dion - Because you loved me/Power of the Dream <---- For some reason, Celine Dion makes me think of an Olympics somewhere, I don't know why. My sibling was really big on the Olympics though, especially the U.S. (was too little to care.) Don't remember which.
New Edition - Still in Love with You
Brian McKnight - 6, 8, 12
Alanis Morissette - Ironic <--- yes, I heard this as a tiny kid, I heard it in high school and was like... this song sounds familiar.
Will Smith - Just the Two of Us.
Divine - Lately <--- This song reminds me of those old days when my brother would play WCII with those old 56k modems hehehe. Not to mention a rainy day.
Barenaked Ladies - One Week

That is probably the ones i can remember at the top of my head.

Strange that you didn't mention KISS since you have the funniest, awesomest Sig that I've seen! But as for the thread, ya all the 80's (hair) metal is what I consider growing up with. :)

Van Halen and Chuck Berry

Yeah, that's pretty much it. For someone who became a musician, I was pretty closeminded. I like a little bit of everything now.
