Got my movie tickets yesterday, for a Wednesday 5pm showing. It's opening, though, the prior night (tonight) at 8:15pm and 10:30pm or so.

Considering it's a worknight, I just didn't even bother with it.

I've been waiting to see this movie for awhile, considering I thought MI3 was pretty amazing, and I'm a big Brad Bird and JJ Abrams fan.

Looks like Rotten Tomatoes agrees -- I think it's up to 95% fresh now. Although one of the local reviewers gave only 2.5 stars (out of 4) and criticized Bird heavily in his review; it felt more like a kneejerk response to me, where if everyone likes a film, you have to find something to criticize about it in order to seem different.

Probably Shame (Michael Fassbender) is higher quality in terms of human drama, but I really am fond of my "smart" action pics.

I posted my thoughts here.

They're covering the fx work in the next Cinefex. The stuff done on the tower in Dubai was real but involved extensive wire removal.

One of less successful fx sequences was the bombing of the Kremlin; digital smoke is still not yet perfected. 650 CG fx shots total. Not quite CGI porn, but still sizeable.

And Michael Giacchino's cultural music tracks (male choir for the Russia sequences, orgasmic female choir for the India sequences, etc.) are about the campiest renditions of such music I've ever heard, but still enjoyable.

And dammit, I want my extended chick fight!!! Without giving much away, it was the biggest anticlimactic letdown since...the final showdown between Cruise and Capote in M:I-3.

BTW, remember when Philip Seymour Hoffman was in Twister?

... actually, I found it rather amusing how that showdown ended, and it was even foreshadowed a bit.

[The movie had more character drama mixed into the action.]

If you want bombasticness, go back to MI2 and enjoy all the explosions.

EDIT: I see you also tried to view Dark Knight as an action movie. It's my favorite Batman ever.... but that's because I see more as a character drama and philosophical comparison statement with a lot of action sequences, not an action picture.

I actually hated M:I-2. Well, maybe hate is a strong word, but it was my least favorite. Too many unintentionally funny slow-mo shots (The Matrix was very popular back then).

And I enjoyed M:I-3 up until that point.

Mission Impossible 2 cracks me up because I'm a big fan of Moulin Rouge ... and one of the heavies that Ethan has to fight in MI2 plays the wussy, snivelling rat-faced Duke in the other movie. Hilarious, talk about a "wtf" moment.

The same dude who was Dracula in Van Helsing?

I plan on seeing it, despite the mediocre-looking trailer. The positive reviews are reassuring; many are claiming that it's the best MI so far. I was a fan of the first one, didn't like the second, and was indifferent about the last one.

I'm excited about this one. Between the trailer and Brad Bird making his feature debut, I'm sold. I also still really enjoy Tom Cruise, all the real life stuff notwithstanding.

Wait, that doesn't sound right.

I just got back.

In terms of the "catfight," it was okay enough -- but it happened a good hour into the movie, U... not early, like you stated.

And Sawyer off Lost got a bit part in the movie (some of you might recognize him, despite the shorn locks).

Also, due to all the promotion and it being the holidays and kids being off school and them even doing pre-release showings on Tuesday, I figured the theater would be pretty full, so I pre-bought tickets. The showing I went to was in one of the main rooms of the theater... and there were only about eight people in the entire place. I could sit pretty much anywhere I wanted. It was ridiculously empty.

Yeah but it should've been an epic battle at the end. And dammit, I wanted it to be longer, with, as I said, more hair pulling, more clothes tearing, and more blood. And they should've developed that French chick as a major villain.

I've never been impressed with chick fights in the cinema because they're treated so humanely. It pisses me off.

Another thing I'll say about the movie is the villains were unspectacular.

But dammit, that fight in the parking garage was pretty frickin' creative!

I sat next to an assistant director on a plane who was filming MI3 years ago. Sounds like Tom Cruise is a bit of a weird dude. Travels with an entourage of his Scientology people or something like that. Very particular about his needs.

Seriously Rotten Tomatoes? 93%? It wasn't a bad movie, but it wasn't a good one either. The trailer didn't impress me and I should have trusted my gut. This will probably be the last MI that I see in theaters. The reason why I liked the first one so much is because it didn't seem like another James Bond movie and it had a suspenseful and intriguing plot. Highly stylized violence and unrealistic action sequences are overrated. Simon Pegg was funny in Shaun of the Dead, but he doesn't belong in Mission: Impossible.

Speaking of ridiculous action movies, looks like there's a sequel to GI Joe coming out and guess who's in it? No...not Jason Statham, but I understand why you would think that because he can't act for shit and plays the same hollow character in every movie. It's Dwayne "the Rock" Johnson, of course. He should've stuck with fake wrestling instead of fake acting.

Shitty high-budget action movies ftw!

They could have, I suppose, but she remained simply a fringe character. I wasn't really impressed by the baddie, although he did go a number of rounds there at the end despite how old he looked.

I've never been impressed with chick fights in the cinema because they're treated so humanely. It pisses me off.

You should watch The Descent. It's a good nuanced look at tough female in a crappy situation; no long drawn out battles between the women themselves, but when they do happen, it's definitely ruthless.

Another thing I'll say about the movie is the villains were unspectacular.

Yes, like I said, I was bored by much of the movie. it didn't elevate above the level of average James Bond pics here.

But dammit, that fight in the parking garage was pretty frickin' creative!

It was interesting, and I liked the constantly changing environment (a more real-time version of the chase scenes in Dark City), and I also figured out what he'd do to reach the box in time. But really, I just felt I was watching a "paint by numbers" piece. I'm just surprised and disappointed. Cruise did fine in the role; it's just that the screenplay sucked and the directing seemed flat, big-picture wise. Uncompelling.

Highly stylized violence and unrealistic action sequences are overrated. Simon Pegg was funny in Shaun of the Dead, but he doesn't belong in Mission: Impossible.

He was in MI3 and did work there as comic relief, because he did not play a HUGE role in the picture... but here they seemed to rely on him to make all the scenes sparkle, and he's really a secondary character in terms of team role. It just got very old. (He's also playing Scotty in Star Trek Abram's style, and again plays a similar role there as well.)

I actually liked the trailer, but it was edited nicely from the boring flow. I would probably only give the movie a 70% on the tomato scale, max. the score in the 90's suggests it is far better than is. (Although remember that it's a thumbs up or thumbs down; all it's say is that 93% of people thought it wasn't bad; that doesn't say they thought it was good.)

Speaking of ridiculous action movies, looks like there's a sequel to GI Joe coming out and guess who's in it? Ha ha, I thought you were referring to yet ANOTHER famous action hero slammed into the end of the trailer for that movie. Like, wth is THAT about? He should just go back to his own series, I heard he's got #5 coming out this year.

Gotta say, I actually liked the first GI Joe for what it was, but the trailer here looked really boring... and is essentially the same overall schema as MI4. Like, you guys all get together and sit in a room and come up with the same plot for your movie studios? It's crazy.

Some gorgeous action set pieces and fairly likable characters. My problem was how weak the villain was, in that...well, I barely noticed him actually. Here's Ethan Hunt and his new crew on the run because of an act of terrorism they didn't commit, the entire world on the brink of a nuclear holocaust and I still didn't feel like a whole lot was at stake while watching the film because of the incredibly weak presence of the antagonist, thus diminishing any sense of threat.

P.S. Is it just me or is Cruise's character made out of adamantium or something, because there were plenty of occasions in the film where he fell or hit his head on completely rock hard surfaces, where no human would be conscious, let alone get up after doing so. That last bit where he fell down two stories inside a car was absolutely ridiculous (but still fun to watch)

Yes, that was one problem -- the villain was not compelling. At least in MI3, the villian had the ability to threaten the heroes life with an inescapable deathtrap and also had unspecified resources (such as when the drone and the militia squad bombed an american bridge to save him) -- it made it unclear where danger lurked in the environment. Here, it was clear that the villian was the only main baddie.

For a thriller to succeed the villain should be stronger than the hero.

But at the same time he shouldn't be too strong as it takes the suspense away.

(There is no way but the hero to go up.)

The villain should be moderately powerful outwitting the hero at all times, annoying the viewer that the hero doesn't see what the villain sees.

In this sense I believe all of us could agree with the fact that 'Iago of Othello' was the best movie villain of all times.

Who's with me???

Here's a small video about the fx.

It's the most footage ever covered on fx in a Mission: Impossible movie. I thought it was quite cool of Tom Cruise to climb the Dubai tower (the sequence was more thrilling than the rock climbing in M:I-2), but what they didn't talk about was the BMW concept car, which was CG in 50 percent of the shots.

While we're at it, let's type John Knoll and Brad Bird.
