I went last night to hear one of the best conductors in the world, Esa-Pekka Salonen, conducting the Brahms violin concerto (not sure of number etc, sorry...the really really famous one!)

You mean the only one. :D

Edit - I'm actually listening to the Isabelle Faust/Daniel Harding/Mahler Chamber Orchestra version (2011) now.

Osvaldo Golijov. I was listening to the CD titled "Yiddishbbuk" was a staff pick on what.cd (If you don't know, don't ask).

Unfortunately, it is just an audience recording, so the audio quality isn't great and the energy of the Galopp isn't really captured.

A great recording, but the Galopp is left out.

A rehearsal recording, cuts the ending short. :(

I wish I could share better recordings..

It's such an awesome concerto, he should have written more...! :D

I feel the same way about Brahms' orchestral works in general. He only wrote four symphonies, a few serenades, a few concertos, some chamber works and too many piano and vocal works (comparatively)...

I recently attended this performance: http://www.cpo-live.com/main/event_detail.php?event_id=501

My favourite music! :yay: John Williams is arguably the single most accomplished composer of the last 40 years. The sheer volume of eminently famous work he has done is astounding. Here are YouTube clips of the songs performed at the concert I attended:

"Adventures on Earth" from E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial

Theme from Jurassic Park

Theme from Jaws

Suite from Harry Potter and The Philosopher's Stone:
"Hedwig's Theme" and "Nimbus 2000"
(I had never seen a celesta before; that's the instrument making the glockenspiel-ish sounds at the beginning. It's actually like a miniature piano that strikes steel plates instead of strings.)

"Harry's Wondrous World"

"The Raiders March" from Raiders of the Lost Ark

Suite from Schindler's List:
"Theme"

"Krakow—Jewish Town"

"Remembrances"

and, composed by Carlos Gardel, (and not on the program)
"Por una cabeza"

Suite from Star Wars:
"Main Title"

"Princess Leia's Theme"

"The Imperial March"

"Yoda's Theme"

"Throne Room & End Titles"

and, tacked on at the end, not on the program,

Theme from Superman

Some dumb saps walked (damned near RAN) out before they started playing the theme from Superman! Fools! They missed out.

I came to conquer this thread:

even rape and pillage if I felt so inclined:

with my guru level knowledge of in classical music and profoundly discerning taste:

and instead I find it empty and inactive for nearly a year

but I do not despair because this post has some potential to get that ball rolling again

and if not, hopefully somebody will at least think its funny

or dryly appreciate the work I put into it

Part, though not my favorite, indicates you probably know your stuff.

My favorite 4th symphony is Tchaikovsky's, this 1st mvt. is so awesome!

Sorry if these have been put up already. They're somewhat popular I suppose, and it's hard to tell since old video links are broken now.

Composer James Horner died recently in a plane crash. He was famous for composing the scores for many big blockbuster films; Braveheart, Apollo 13, and particularly Titanic. He collaborated with James Cameron a few times, composing scores for Aliens and Avatar as well. In the years between Aliens (1986) and Titanic (1997) he collaborated with another director: Phil Alden Robinson. Robinson and Horner worked together on Robinson's best-known work, Field of Dreams (1989), as well as his following film: Sneakers (1992).

Sneakers is about a motley group of men who break into companies' security systems in order to point out the systems' vulnerabilities, and end up in a bind when two suits from the NSA show up and ask them to retrieve a mysterious "little black box" from a mathematician who specializes in cryptography. It's not one of my favourite films of all-time but it's the sort of movie that, if it's on TV and I have the time, I'll definitely sit down and watch. It's pretty light-hearted and very prescient about cyber-security and intelligence gathering, and has a great cast: Robert Redford, Sidney Poitier, Mary McDonnell, Ben Kingsley, Dan Aykroyd, David Straithairn, River Phoenix, James Earl Jones and great character actors Timothy Busfield, Eddie Jones and Donal Logue.

I always liked Horner's score. I believe it's one of his most under-appreciated.
