Hey guys,

I'm not sure if there's a thread out there already like this, frankly I'm too lazy to look so I apologize if there's any repetition on my part. ;) I'm just curious if there are any styles of dance out there that you guys really admire, would like to learn, or have learned that you would like to share?

I know the media's been pretty heavy the last few years with reality shows like, 'So you think you can Dance', 'Dancing with the Stars' and 'Canada/America's Best Dance Crew,' etc. Do you feel like that's had any influence on your desire to learn a particular style? Do you think MBTI type plays any part in your interest?

Me? I'm no dancer. I took Jazz when I was younger (and had to perform a terrible routine wearing a hideous dinosaur costume, but we won't talk about that.) nowadays I just kind of move my body to the beat and do my own thing. Dancing is a lot of fun for me and great exercise, though I don't consider myself particularly good at it. :coffee:

If I was going to take some kind of formal dance lesson I would love to learn Hip-Hop, Soca/Dancehall, Belly dancing, or something else that would really get me moving and feeling sexy. I've actually been trying to teach myself to hip roll in my spare time, it's coming along, but it could be better ;) Tips welcome!

Uhm, I understand it's somewhat atypical for an ENTJ, but I'm a rather talented dancer. I started taking some lessons at 15, modern dancing. Teachers told me they though I had talent, so I took classic ballet (nothing extreme - 3 days a week) for 2 years. I was pretty good, but it was too late to hope for anything professional. Anyway, classic ballet is definitely the best kind of dancing, when you can do it right. Extremely taxing as far as precision goes, but equally satisfying when you manage to execute something perfectly.

Modern dance is cool too, but I didn't like to execute coreographies written by somebody else; I felt like dancing at my own rythm would have been more natural. When I stopped ballet I did some hip-hop, really nice ryhtm but I don't the excessive focus on your arms, there's a strong need for upper body strenght.

Short answer:

Anyway, I don't think (here? In the US the situation might be different, as some posters told me) girls really appreciate a guy which can dance well, especially because I usually like introverted girls, which are likely to feel embarassed.

I like watching tango. Dancing salsa can be fun, but basically I suck at dancing.

I've always loved flamenco, the music, the dance itself. I've wanted to learn it but never really got around to it.

This is the Riverdance version but it's really cool as well:

Giving or receiving?

Receiving!

I can dance fairly well, and actually love performing, but when it comes down to mixing the two I feel it is best for me to give in to primal impulses and fuck my partner's brains out.

Well, I took Folklorico for 2 years.
Here's an example:

Took Cheer for 1 year in the 8th grade and I've taught myself to belly dance (though I'm still a work in progress). I've known how to salsa since I can remember and I'm pretty good with hip hop.

I would LOVE to learn how to tango and Rumba!
I'm really just a fan of any type of dance that represents a culture or a time in history. :wubbie:

i like tango, and salsa.
my wife is amazing at both, especially salsa. i could learn forever from her.

has anybody tried any of the styles of tango where you embrace very very closely at your chest but then have your feet far apart?
my wife and i much prefer to keep our legs close when we tango, but it is pretty interesting to watch these sort of "leaning" tango dances.

I *love* Quick Step/Foxtrot, and miss it sooo much, and to a lesser degree, I miss ballroom dancing in general.

These days I stick to bellydancing ;)

This is the routine I'm currently working on:

That's what I like... some good reggae music and something like that... even though I tend to be a lot more energic :D And less serious.

Of course, this looks way cooler. But I can't dance like that, so it isn't my favorite kind of dance. :D
