So how do you guys feel about MMA?

Anyone watch fights?

Does anyone else here train to fight?

I'm curious to see how the members of this forum feel about it seeing as how this site (by its nature) has a very diverse membership. I think that there will be some in favor. Some who feel its not for them. And lastly some who think its nothing but a barbaric spectacle (basically the "please think of the children argument).

I started training last august at a gym here in Florida. Initially, I was just looking for the fitness benefits and the stress relief. After a long day of the socratic method there's nothing better than going a few rounds with a heavy bag or a partner. Eventually though I fell in love with MMA. My goals now are to eventually be in some amateur fights.

MMA is great in alot of different ways people who think its barbaric don't understand how great it is. THE END.

It's super fun and a great way to get those stresses out of your life. Nothing like punching someone in the face. >)

I'll watch if it's on. It's always a good time watching people beat the shit out of each other.

i used to box in college on our boxing team as a light heavyweight 165 lbs. i used to have really fast hands.

i like watching MMA, as long as they are not hugging in missionary position

too much hugging, it makes me wonder how 2 ppl train when no one else is in the gym. like... do they get tired and stay in that position??? lol no one knows but them.

I think I've only watched any of it for a few minutes, but count me under the "barbaric spectacle" crowd (and I don't agree with your link that this is a "think of the children" argument). It's just not anything I care to watch. Seeing people intentionally trying to injure / beat each other senseless as entertainment just has no appeal.

Don't get me wrong - I'm sure it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to prepare for such a thing, and I'm sure that the training they do is a great way to get in shape, but certainly not entertaining or at all enjoyable for me to watch.

I think the idea is cool, but...

x< 1 < y

where

x = # of sweaty naked men groping someone else I'll tolerate on-screen
y= # of sweaty men groping someone else on any given screenshot of an MMA fight

also given

i. I use the internets
ii. boxers do not count

MMA usually ends up as a wrestling match, which looks like two guys having rough sex. I would much rather watch a stand-up Muay Thai or Kung Fu fight.

The whole MMA thing has been highly disappointing; the boring types of martial arts are the most effective in a one-on-one competition, while more entertaining martial arts that would probably have better real-world application (the ones designed with armed and/or multiple opponents in mind) are weeded out.

Interestingly, Muay Thai seems to straddle both of these worlds; of course, they have now handicapped its specialists by prohibiting things such as elbows...:steam:

I have zero interest in watching most sports. I don't see the point of constantly promoting genetic traits which has long lost their position of importance in the real world.

Yet, I am strangely drawn to watching MMA fights since the early days. Perhaps it's because it was considered barbaric and non-conformist. Or it might be because combat skills are still relevant.

I think it's a good way for people with natural violent tendencies to gather up in an organization to make money off what they would probably be doing anyways for free, plus they do it legally. Overall it probably makes the streets safer by giving violent people an outlet like Kimbo, imagine him still being on the streets.

It's also good to study the effectiveness of various offensive or defensive techniques and styles.

I also think the OP started training to gain power and try and kick some ass. Fitness is one thing, but MMA training has specific goals, to destroy your opponent.

The funny thing is, I have never stuck someone in anger. I've only been in two (street) fights, both ended with me choking the opponent out (both also occurred before I knew anything about MMA). Also, MMA did interest me from a self defense standpoint (as I live in a fairly dangerous city). The fitness aspect also intrigued me. Nothing is harder than fighting.

I am one of the increasingly few white American boxing fans under the age of 35, so I haven't gotten into MMA so much. A lot of the culture around it seems buffoonish to me, but the sport itself is fine. I met Rampage when we were both in a club box to watch the Anaheim Ducks win the Stanley Cup, though. Seems like a pretty nice guy.

I don't think it's barbaric...I just think it's incredibly uninteresting.

A good fight is absolutely beautiful to watch. By good I mean, technical, clean and varies in style. Also, it has to keep up a good pace. And of course, a lot of judo moves and take-downs. I'm also a sucker for submissions. If it's done clean and deliberate, it gives me a tingle down there.
