I saw Lust, Caution earlier this week and I am LOVING the score. I think the music in this film matches and sets the tone extremely well.

Any suggestions for other good soundtracks?

Matrix movies

(I tend to like soundtracks a lot, so am having a hard time thinking of ones that other people would enjoy outside of the movie.)

Matrix movies

!!!

:party2:

I was going to suggest these and thought people would just laugh about it.

Don Davis is utterly amazing, in regards to the unconventional score (especially the music in "The Matrix Revolutions" -- that was unfortunately probably the BEST part of that movie!)... and even the "commercial soundtrack" for Reloaded wasn't bad.

And of course, the theme is a classic example of creating a recognizable piece out of an atonal melody... neat (!).

Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard have done some nice soundtracks as well. (Zimmer is very versatile.)

Another evocative composer is David Julyan, who has done all the soundtracks (or close to them) for director Christopher Nolan (Memento, The Prestige, etc.) as well as the background music (creepy stuff) for "The Descent."

I also liked "The Nightmare Before Christmas" soundtrack :) -- and the early Ashman/Menken broadway style music (Little Shop of Horrors, and the rebirth of Disney).

"The Incredibles" soundtrack was good as well.

And Hans Zimmer's music all sounds the same.

Oh, you know THAT's not exactly true.

(Compare his use of a rock/string quartet sound in Mission Impossible 2, versus his more formal orchestral sounds in Gladiator, for example -- especially the "waltz" concept for the large battlescenes.)

The score for Gladiator was every bit as generic as the movie itself. And I hated Mission: Impossible 2 partly because of Zimmer's score.

And when Zimmer works for Bruckheimer, all the music is literally the same.

I loved John Williams' score for 1941, highly underrated movie if you ask me.

Although does anyone notice that the Harry Potter theme music sounds awfully like the Schindler's List theme music? They both have the same beginning motif.

"Memento" is one I forgot, it is quite fun to listen to outside of the movie. Don't listen to the soundtrack CD if you need to stay alert, though, it is a "sleepy" one.

I'm going to assume that this thread is about musical score instead of sountrack album.

* Anything by Bernard Herrmann
* Jaws
* The use of Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells" in The Exorcist

I also think the Ocean's 11 movies are exceptionally well scored.

I like the guy who did American Beauty, Finding Nemo, and a bunch of others. I can't remember his name at the moment.

Thomas Newman.

I agree.

I envisioned my own little Grand Theft Auto movie (based on the game) with Thomas Newman doing the score.

Thomas' brother, David, is good, too -- he scored Serenity.
