You ever listen to an album you haven't heard in ages, only to re-remember just how and why it's so good? Having that right now.

Why are they being interviewed by Garrett from Community?

What can be more aughts than having a vinyl record for a talk show host screened for anthrax? We need to go back to that /sarcasm. Amazing that all the people who eagerly went along with all that shit flipped out at the prospect of masks/vaccines.

Is it weird that I have almost no inclination to go to concerts? Like, conceptually, the whole thing just sounds weird to me. For me, music is too intimate to be simply shared -- it's a private experience in which provides a backdrop to filter through my emotions in a way that may not produce itself organically. For instance, I've learned that, for me, it's almost never a good idea to share my music tastes with someone because if, for instance, they don't see what I see, or aren't really interested, it's too irrationally devastating -- it's like I've peeled my orange peel layers back and shown you my squishy innards, and the notion of rejection is too much to bear.

I've been to a few concerts with friends. It was a little boring, I think because I didn't know the bands very well.

The Jack White concert I went to I enjoyed much more, or would have, were it not for the person who spent the concert texting his idiot girlfriend or whoever. (He also had the temerity to get upset because I dared move away from him.) Jack is right to try to not let people use those things at his shows; naturally I sit behind next to the one guy who got around it. (You're supposed to put your phone in a wallet that is unlocked after the show).

I know what you mean about sharing music tastes; I like certain bands that many people love to hate on. I feel strongly about some of their music that if somebody were to trash them, it would absolutely feel like trashing me. I suppose IDGAF at this point. Also, sometimes a song expresses what I'm feeling or thinking better than words ever could.

Aside:

I think some people might roll their eyes because some of these groups I like have lyrics referencing things like God, Jesus, or the Bible. I don't feel like they're trying to evangelize or convert people, but express extremely intense feelings or human longing or even feeling "set up" by the world they live in. When somebody mentions something like that in a song, there are so many things it could mean.

People take this stuff too literally. Do these people freak out when they go into an art museum and see anything before the 17th century?

I always thought this was just a nice love song:

Turns out it was about a nuclear apocalypse the whole time! I can't believe I missed it.

Music has now reached its final form. Pack everything up, musicians, it's all been perfected.

I just discovered that dark ambient country western music is a thing and I'm really enjoying the vibe. I kind of want to score a gritty western now lol

Desert island albums:

  • Lonesome Crowded West - Modest Mouse
  • Contra - Vampire Weekend (this is the prettiest one, the title track is especially good)
  • Boarding House Reach - Jack White
  • In the Aeroplane Over the Sea - Neutral Milk Hotel
  • Good News for People Who Love Bad News - Modest Mouse (This is very nostalgic to me and defines the time between high school and college; I picked it up at Hot Topic and everything. And as a rule, I'm drawn to anything that reminds me of before shit hit the fan. )

This song is great. I particularly like "Everybody is making love, or else expecting rain"; it's quite ominous. There is some great imagery and poetry here.

For me, it's a song about everything being perfect on the surface (like an oceanic cruise, even), which is masking a deeper, fractured reality. This song is about what happens to people who are trying to figure out what's going on, and the take on that is rather dark. Most of the characters could be construed as doubters of one sort or another; Desolation Row is where people wind up when they become aware of the truth. This is why Desolation Row is ultimately forbidden. You're supposed to be one of the good people who sets sail on the Titanic and doesn't think too much about Desolation Row. (And you definitely shouldn't concern yourself with the fact that one of the captains is responsible for the Cats movie that came out a couple of years ago.)

Maybe my favorite Bowie song. This, or Ziggy Stardust, or Starman. Notice a theme here?

This is Major Tom to Ground Control
I'm stepping through the door
And I'm floating in a most peculiar way
And the stars look very different today

I like those, but my favorite is As the World falls down. Followed closely somewhere between ashes to ashes and Underground and Magic Dance.

I've got a message from the Action Man: "I'm happy, hope you're happy too."
Ashes to Ashes. Funk to Funky. We all know Major Tom's a junkie.

"It's only forever... Not long at all..."

The Goblin King has always been relatable to me since I was a wee goblin babe myself.

As the pain sweeps through
Makes no sense for you
Every thrill is gone
Wasn't too much fun at all
But I'll be there for you-ou-ou
As the world falls down

You need to Watch the Venture Bros Jules. Don't argue, don't overthink, just get max for a month and binge the whole thing.
You will love it. It's maybe one of the best shows ever written.

I remembered this detail about April being a fan of Neutral Milk Hotel. She does a pretty good job explaining why so many people love this band.

  1. Just when you think the album can’t get any better and it has grabbed you by the throat and shaken you around in order to make you understand how beautiful and sad the universe is, you get “Ghost” and “Two Headed Boy Part II,” which are both so good it makes me want to punch someone.

Same words I would use to describe this album. It might be the most beautiful and sad thing I've ever listened to, although some of the Oaxcan-style tracks from Beirut: March of the Zapotec come close.

'Worst performance in the history of Coachella': Tech issues doom Grimes act

This made me lol.

When people use terms like "white culture", it's always a dead giveaway that they probably don't mean a particular European culture/heritage and it's a likely dog whistle for "white race". Caucasians are a broad and diverse array of cultures and a part of the greater fabric of human culture. I have no problem with people celebrating, say, Irish, Italian, Romanian (etc) culture. Start talking "white" culture and what even is that referring to? Such a broad and vague statement to make.

so you are an aficianado of Bowie's 80s period? Kind of an uneven period for him but there were some real gems he made in there. My favorite 80s Bowie pop songs are probably Underground and Absolute Beginners (if we're ignoring Scary Monsters and tin Machine which are both from the 80s but don't really slot in neatly with anything else he did in the 80s)
