Is a History PhD worth it?

I think it's something best paired with another degree unless you just want to teach it or write about it.
Yes, pairing it with a more "pragmatic" but OK degree is a good choice. So you always have a backup plan + that way you get to keep your options open. I know of a historian who used to be a high school teacher, but who eventually decided to apply for a PhD in History. Now he's employed at a high-ranking university.
