I do have the ability to go to college myself, which is good, but the thing is, there are more things I want to pick up coursewise than I can afford. And besides that, I've been thinking about the issue of college alternatives, and want to personally test some potential examples of them.

So, here are things I've been thinking about trying:

1. Taking free or cheaper online courses, through things such as Khan Academy, the Great Courses, and so on.
2. Getting college-level textbooks and reading them.
3. Meeting with other people who are doing the same thing to discuss the fields.

I'm probably not going to end up doing these, because I'm a lazy fuck, but this thread can motivate me and maybe get some suggestions. Perhaps some of you might want to try it with me. :)

You can still enroll in an online university course, get your bachelors' that way. Although it won't look too hot on a resume if you're wanting to go job-seeking immediately afterwards. Universities are nice because they can help you join groups where your interests lie and network.

It's anathema to the introvert but sometimes we got to get out of our comfort shells if we want success in life. :peepwall:

Oh, I'm already enrolled in an offline one. XD I'm mostly interested in doing this because I want to see if it works, and because I don't think I have space to take everything I want to take. The suggestions are more for where to go, and also or who might be willing to also try this and keep me from forgetting about it. XD

Ah. I see! :p I heard ASU is doing a full-ride scholarship for their online course. I forgot about it, I hope it hasn't ended. ;o

I like reading textbooks and writing out the answers to questions. One can learn a lot that way.

What is the goal here, then? To gain knowledge? Fine, that is doable. To gain a degree without attending a university, online or otherwise? No, that is not possible.

(Yes, I saw that you are already enrolled in a university)

Yeah, I don't want to get a degree through online stuff. XD My plan here is just to learn extra shit. :)

Why do you mention it?

Those are all valid ideas. Learning is about being hungry, not about where you eat. So long as you can tell the bullshit from the quality material, you're fine with those ideas :)

Source: Two bachelor's degrees and never meeting a professor who would think those weren't worthwhile pursuits and who didn't do those themselves.

I mentioned it because it sounded a bit like you wanted to get another degree solely through self study and taking some sort of test or whatever when it can't work that way. You never know what people do and don't know.

But as for learning new things on your own, I'm trying to get a group going to learn some Japanese. Interested? :p

Once upon a time there is library; but I suppose now instead of burning, but now they've managed to just make sure everyone is not interested through sheer sophisticated of social engineering.

You don't need any greater authority to tell you what you know, learn or understand. Reading is free. Just do it.

It's the only way now, tuition prices are abysmal; and self discipline is a muscle. Just work at it.

Hmmmm. Japanese wasn't on the original list of things but I hate turning people down. I'll think on it some.

I created a thread which was a little like this one and then a blog, this is my focus too, in work and out I want to learn and I want to use every available means.

When I got my masters in politics and economics from UCD it was a one year course but it comprised topics and reading which I'd probably been engaged on all my life, it was a great year because the learning really flowed easily and became an archetype for how I'd like to live my life.

Balancing it all with physical fitness training and managing to socialise at the same time isnt easy though, its easy to become a bit neurotic about it all.
