I think dialects in Germany are even more pronounced than they are in Britain. Standard German is of course well understood, but the more South you get, the fewer replies you will get in kind.

Neugierige Erinnerungen? Was soll das bedeuten?
Bald werde ich alles auf Deutsch vergessen...

Hmm...ziemlich interessant...
I will try to keep that in mind. :)

Oh ja, ist Wicked (Die Hexen von Oz), noch in Stuttgart zeigend?

...Ich weiß, dass es eine ein bisschen zufällige Frage ist, aber das ist meine Lieblingsmusikproduktion. I think it sounds much prettier auf Deutsch.

Learning german is quite easy. If you dont want to bother with learning that old cryptic celtic language or whereever it comes from, there are crucial messages you can convey to an german audience by mere body language:

Lesson 1: learn the local customs and important habits:

Here's an example of a german student from White Russia, who tried so heavily to be good at lesson one that he not even tried to pick up the german intrest in soccer, no he even worked as a referee in a soccer game. As the tip of the iceberg he even immitated the most important body language, namly: doing things while being drunk what is called "Capoooeiiiirrraaaa shalalalalala" and is not to be confused with the equally named boxing sport:

Lesson 2: know your tradition:

An important drink to taste is called the "Gedeck" or "Zuckerei". While Zuckerei is a northern variant of Gedeck, the classic Gedeck consits of a glas full with beer and a small glass full of corn. The traditional way to deal with that setup now is to throw the bottle of corn into the beer and then drink it all in one nip. Important notice: you should have someone standing behind you, cause you'll prolly flip over.

Here's an example of young germans imitating traditional behaviour:

Lesson 3: Complain !

The average german complains about anything at least 3 times the day. May it be the weather, the work or other existential things that will never change, the way to complain is the startup line to many conversations with foreigners.

Here are some common phrases you can use to start good conversations with german citizens, without having to know too much about the language at all. Remember when you say anything of it to make your voice sound the most suffering way possible:

"Jaja, der Sommer in Deutschland..." (regional complain about that the summer in Germany always sucks if it rains for one day in summer)

"Politiker sind alles Verbrecher" (Politicians are all gangsters)

And the alltime classic:

"Daran werden wir auch Nichts mehr ändern" (These things we wont change either. What implies at the same time they dont even try)

Here's a good example of the average complaining german, watch the video first and then see down below for the translation:

The guy says: Oh man it's always so boring, every day is the same, you never experience something exiting, life is so dreary.
The barkeeper says: Yes, you are right; what do you want to drink ?
And the guy replies: The usual !

Lesson 4: The Autobahn

There are many ways in life to commit suicide, one of them is The Autobahn.

First of all an important driving lesson: "10 drugs you shouldnt consume, if you operate a car":

Second, a mutual way of winning the heart of a german is taking him for a ride in your american car with that hugh totally over-sized engine. Here's an example on what it should look like:

(btw.: setting the left blinker while being on the left lane of the road is the national warning to other drivers one the road that you approaching from the back with 200 mph. You should use that carefully cause the usage is prohibited by the law and avenged as coercion. Driving 200 mph but is ok)

Lesson 5: Know your heroes

If you talk to germans about old german philosophers or great scientists you will not impress them, cause most of the germans dont even know about them. So know the real heroes !

1st: the guys from the office:

There aint much to say about them, but: u rule !

2nd: Robin Hood

I'ld like to translate for you what he says but in terms of protection of the youth I am not allowed to do that :D

3rd: Spongebob

4th: Bastian Pastewka

5th: Klausi

Bumped.

Es gibt doch bestimmt noch Interessenten hier, oder?

From what I gather, this is a self help group meeting place for all those who enjoy and/or struggle with German culture and the German language. We're here to help:

Reminded me of this bit from the extended DVD version of David Lynch's 'Dune':

Gurney Halleck: Behold, as a wild ass in the desert, go I forth to my work.

German DVD subtitle:

Ha ha ha. Oh, sowas gibt's gerade bei Billig-DVDs immer mal wieder.

Gut zu sehen, dass mein Berufstand noch nicht überflüssig geworden ist.

Mad Hatter and I are still here

...only we started dating after the last exchange, became a couple and started a family together. Yes, it's been that long.

Nice to see this thread resurrected. (I could probably remind myself how to say this in German but it would take too long. Perhaps I will be more ambitious next time.)
