Great play and a great film. Though, I haven't read the book. So if any of you have and the book isn't like the movie, feel free to correct my typing of the characters
Thanks for starting this thread. Les Miserables has long been one of my favorites. I have read the book (English translation), seen the recent movie, seen the stage play twice by two different casts, and watched the
concert version several times. I find the characters mostly consistent in terms of type with a couple of exceptions in the lastest movie, which I attribute to (what I consider to be) some serious miscasting. Specifically, the adult Cosette actress comes across as a wimp/ragdoll, who simply goes around needing someone to take care of her (ISFP/J), rather than a girl living under the shadow of her early abuse, and trying to dream of a future within the very sheltered life Valjean provides (INFP). Similarly, the movie Javert lacks the remorseless edge of all the others I have seen, especially Philip Quast in the concert version. He is still ISTJ, just doesn't seem to have his heart in it. As for a list of types:
Jean Valjean- ISFP: he takes life as it comes, and people for that matter, and responds accordingly. Yes, he does make plans, as when he secures his wealth for use after he must flee his life as M. Madeleine, but then planning isn't the exclusive purvey of TJs. Everyone does it, especially when one's life and future depend on it. I also see much more Fi than Fe, and Se vs Si. He takes in the evidence of the present moment, and makes decisions about it based on his personal values.
Javert- ISTJ: obvious.
Fantine- I/ESFP: in the book, she is described as fun-loving and full of life, with no thought to consequences, or the future. Like Valjean, she reacts rather than thinking ahead. Even leaving Cosette with the Thenardiers came about by happenstance, not a deliberate plan to provide for her while Fantine found a job and saved up money. These details don't come out in the show/movie, but her depiction there isn't inconsistent with it.
Cosette- INFP: see above.
Marius- INFP (not sure about this, but can't think of anything better)
Eponine- ENFP
Thenardier- EST/FP: He seems driven much more by his emotions than his wife does, hence the prospect of F.
Mme Thenardier: ESTJ
Enjorlas-ENFJ: Think about it: the rebellion he is planning is entirely illogical, except as a massive demonstration of collective values. He is charismatic and motivational.
The Bishop- ISFJ: He lives his faith and his ideals very tangibly
Gavroche-ESTP: a miniature "action hero" almost
(It is interesting that there are few if any NT characters.)
