I LOVE me some Buck Owens. If you only know him as the guy on Hee Haw, or if you're too young to know him at all, do yourself a favor and root around on youtube. The Buckaroos were a tight but raw honkytonk type country band, and they created the Bakersfield sound, which was very distinct and quite different from what was going on in Nashville at the time (lots of string-based arrangements, etc). Buck Owens had a jillion #1 hits, and basically owned country music in the 60s--and he did it his way. His guitarist, Don Rich, inspired me to take up guitar.

Loretta Lynn. If you don't like Loretta Lynn, I simply don't know what to tell you. She's like an Everywoman Poet. Her songs seemingly simple, but they pack a lot of wisdom and wit. Don't underestimate her. Plus, Loretta is a hoot. Also, you should definitely not, under any circumstances, mess with her man. A favorite:
