Hi,

I'm pretty sure that I know my e-type. Nevertheless, I would like a second opinion. I have tried to summarize "me"; that is, what I tend to do and think and why.

Do your worst you enneagram expert you!!!!

- I need to have wide buffer zone in order to get my thoughts and feelings together. I leave it when I feel that I have dealt with my inner thoughts and emotions enough. For this, I block out others with music at work or spend a lot of time at home alone, or in public, but alone. I reserve specific times for going out with friends and socialising is not my default state.
- I do certain things, like keeping in shape, writing, taking courses etc. in order to feel strong and independent. I tell others that I do these things so that they “know” that I do not need anyone and am self-sufficient.
- I hate conflicts. I hate having to confront. But I will and my tone will either be gregarious or callous, depending on whether I am the one-up or one-down.
- I don’t get annoyed often. People tell me that I have a very calm demeanour, even if sometimes I feel like an out of control train-wreck.
- It irritates the hell out of me when people force themselves onto others. When I see this type of behaviour, I poke at them. Provoke them. Show them that they have nothing on me. When someone thinks they have God’s truth, I will try to show them how wrong they are, whether I agree with them or not.
- I am often seen as being a devil’s advocate, always seeing a counter point of view. This sometimes gets on people’s nerves, especially when all they were looking for was to validate their opinion.
- I don’t want to be cool. I don’t want people to think that I do what everybody else does. I do my own things. I dress in a non cool way. Not necessarily with ugly or unmatched clothes. Rather conservative clothes that might have a touch of posh. However, I don’t mind wearing clothes with holes or that look old.
- During my time alone, I mostly think about myself and my projects. I sometimes will spend a chunk of time thinking about girls and relationships (I am single again but was in three different LTR for most of the past 15 years). I look for a connection, a "us against the world" type of deal. I am weary of girls who need their value to be enhanced by the mate they are with.
- A lot of the time, though, I am going over my personal finances, checking out investment possibilities, etc. I have rental property and often think about the renovations that I plan to do.
- The career I chose was a very thought out decision on my part. I wanted to work with numbers and stats but with a focus on people and behaviours.
- Although I find my work interesting and consider that I perform fairly well, I have discovered that I have needed an outlet for actual creativity. I somehow feel disconnected with people at work. I have the impression that they actually believe that there is truth to what we do. In my view, we are but part of a large social system that has evolved into what it is today but could very well be something else. I have lately found that writing fiction gives creative outlet that my brain needs. I also started enjoying literature again and music and concerts take up a large part of my time.
- On the outside, people find me to be a nice person, positive, although with a little bit of a brash edge. My life line is very different from most of my close friends and family.
- I hate that a lot of people find that I am shy. This is not how I feel inside. Rather, I speak when I decide to. Perhaps I do not have the best social skills, but I hardly come off as socially awkward.

I'm thinking 5w4 or 9w1. You wrote a lot about maintaining independence and inner harmony, and avoiding social stresses - which could really mean either type. I think you would have to give more information in this area for me to decide. how do you feel about this:

The mistype between Fives and Nines is a common mistype. In particular, it is generally Nines who mistype, or are mistyped by others, as Fives. Both Nines and Fives are withdrawn types and many Nines are intellectual, so there are some real commonalities. But Nines are generally attracted to thought systems which offer some sense of comfort and harmony. Fives, on the other hand, are frequently attracted to what disturbs them. Nines are far less likely to display intellectual arrogance than are Fives who often think that most people are intellectually rather dim. More noticeably, Nines tend to relate to a wide variety of people easily and comfortably; this is hardly ever the case with Fives.

Description is quite close to me but sounds more assertive. I'd say 5w4 integrating to Eight (as shown by your tendency to play devil's advocate and provoke people who try to force stuff onto you). Possibly 4w5, but less likely.

Also, MBTI sounds INTx in my opinion - not INFJ.

musttry i have a different theory: your a 7w8 or an 8w7.

1 <- (stress) 7 (growth) -> 5
5 <- (stress) 8 (growth) -> 2

you have a strong need for independence and a fear of being controlled, depict both the growth and the stress point of 5 and the stress point of 1.

so here's a question:
how do you feel about missed oppertunities? what happens when you feel deprived?

Thanks everyone for giving me hand with this.

Savageidealist I was actually suprised that you pinpointed 5w4, 9w8 and 4w5. Those are exactly the types that I have always considered.

@southernkross According to that description, then, I would definitely be a 9w1 because I really don't feel socially awkward. However, there are just so many things about nines that I don't really identify with (the whole laid back, taking it as it comes, keeping things quiet and peaceful, retreating from problems etc. It's not my style to let things slide and see where it goes).

Oakysage 1w9 is interesting also. However, the whole perfectionist thing and being so sure of one's beliefs doesn't really fit either.

Nales Your bit on MBTI is interesting. I've always been torn between INFP, INTP and INFJ. I see a lot of myself in those descriptions just as there is a lot of things I don't identify with. I sort of decided by analysing the cog processes. I'm pretty much tied on Fi-Fe, but see myself much more in Ti and Ni. Add to that a preference for Se over Si and presto, INFJ. The reason I can't be an INTJ is because my dad is one and I just don't associate with the Te associated with xxxJ thing. Also, by looking at the families, I don't see myself as rational as NTs. I think I am much too personable, humanistic and subjective to fit into the NT family group.

Mane I have to admit, I had not considered 7w8 and 8w7 at all. The basic DNA of the 7, as I understand it is to be always out and about, curious about everything, getting into everything and barely sitting still to take a breath. My understanding of 8s is that it is always about being one up or one down and seeing everything in terms of power and control. Although not against the idea, I find that the descriptions just go against my tendency to isolate in order to process things and come back out to do something about it.

your tendecy to isolate in order to process things is staple INFJ behavior, and it's fairly normal to have those behaviors as exceptions to the normal "enneagram" behavior. likewise, culture is also influencing you, and having spent much time in canada i know that common assertive behaviors aren't considered apropriate there, which would go against your INFJ consideration of others. generally the best way to view the enneagram isn't in accordance to terminology but in accordance to fear, which i've talked about more here, and you seem to be motivated the fear of loosing your sense of independence - which is overall more critical to an 8's thinknig then whether it expresses itself in term of hirarchical social tendecies or not. likewise, 7's have less to do with energy or extraversion and more to do with the fear of being deprived, and the resulting stress and growth points, which you do seem to have...

so the question is: does the basic fear of 7's motivate you? have you ever acted out of stress in response of being deprived? as an INFJ, have you ever judged or resented someone for depriving you of something you wanted?

Mane Interesting. I need to think this through.

Never really considered 7 and I can't say that I particularly relate to feeling "deprived". However, the idea of finally finding satisfaction in a future plan (planning as a tool to keep the good feelings) does resonate strongly as well as gluttony (not food necessarily but any experience to delay the difficult). Also, getting scattered is something that I work against and I have realised that I have to reign in in order to grow. Furthermore, the 7s view of egalitarian power distribution in order not to be controlled by any body else's whims also makes sense. Being "limited" is definitely a scary thing.

However, none of the typical 7 behaviours really apply. Spontaneity, center of attention, extraversion, etc. do not resonate.

(There is little in the 8 description that really fits because of their unequivocal assertiveness, decisiveness and authoritativeness as well as their need to be stronger than others).

You sound a bit like me, so I would venture to say 9w1. I can see a bit of 5w4 as well. To you generally try to smooth out disagreements and maintain harmony?

...because your an introvert. the descriptions are made to fit with those who most commonly apply to them - and there's some statistical tendecies for certain MBTI types to be certain enneagram types - but there are exceptions. i'm an extraverted 4w5 for example.

and i'll be honest with you, my exwife could have made a nearly identical list...
in fact a nearly identical everything... INFJ, great white north..

between 1-10, how certain are you that your not a woman?

LOL 10, but an NF male, what're you gonna do!!!

Ok, so what resonates in the 4w5 for you? Is it the needing to express your innermost so that you don't blend into the masses? Also, you seem sure that you're a T, if you were an ENFP, you'd probably fit right in with a lot of the 4s.

Other people's disagreements? When other people disagree there's like a welling up of anger and yeah, I'll try to show both where the misunderstandings are. The only thing is that I tend to do more of the confronting (although not agressively) than others.

It's easier to type someone close to you. You get to see their natural behavior, fixations, coping mechanisms, etc. Based on the list given, it can be interpreted in so many ways. There is a tendency, that I see in a lot of people, as well as in myself, to regurgitate the things we've read from the descriptions. So I think this is all fruitless. For the record though, I think to best way to figure out type is to focus on the neurosis.

Hey, thanks for your input. I would, however, disagree. I think that it is very difficult for someone close to you to type you because they can't really know "why" you do what you do. It is easier to type other's MBTI because at least you can sort of see "how" they do the things they do. They can only interpret the behaviours and how you make them feel. The whole exercise was precisely to see how others would interpret what I considered to be the most salient points. Of course I've read up on all of this (three or four books) and so I use terminology that others will recognise and am not too surprised. Had I said something like, "I don't understand how others can repay kindness with meanness" or something like that, then a lot more people would have mentioned 2 etc.

The fact that most answers point in the direction that I was thinking, I feel that I have an outside verification of my conclusions. Of course, mane's answers are intriguing because they go against what I think.

I do agree with your point on neurosis and it is similar to mane's point about fears and stress points.

i have about zero Fi, quite a lot of Fe, too often subdued by my Ti against it's will, and a strong runaway Ne.. the only real exception to ENTPs is that i also have a relatively strong Ni... i'm a 4w5 because all the tests say i'm a 4w5, i really don't want to be a 4w5, which further suggests that i'm a 4w5. you can pretty much always tell which type you are by which you hate the most.

the rule for the enneagram:
the ones that is describing someone you'd like to be? isn't you...
but the one describing the parts of you you don't like being? that's you right there.

The siumple fact that you call your presentation "unoriginal" shows that you have nothing 4. I'm not sure of what is your type exactly, but clearly not 4 or Xw4.

Basing on what you say, you are controlled and introvert. Not 7 or Xw7. I think the possibilities for you are 1, 5w6, 6w5 and 9. Maybe 8w9 too. But I have a stronger inclination for 6w5.
