INTP or ISTP?

Alright,

Matthew's been wondering about his type lately. After receiving a hint about it from another typology forum and recalling that many have described him as a literal person, Matthew is strongly considering having an S preference. He would appreciate input on other's perceptions of him as well as their personal S/N sorting mechanisms.

From here and on vent, you seem INTP to me - but does it really matter?

super-fun-happy quote time!

Lenore Thompson said:
The difference between INTPs and ISTPs in this regard is simply one of Intuition verses Sensation. ISTPs are entierly present-oriented, tied perceptually to their context. INTPs are motivated by Intuition to recognize possibilities. They're excited by the changes a particular environment can make in the way people think or live their lives.

...

INTPs, whose tertiary function is Introverted Sensation, generally focus their defences on their material well-being. They may worry about the harmful effects of certain environments, or the effect of particular behaviours on their health or stamina.

ISTPs, who tertiary function is Introverted Intuition, are more likely to focus on patterns of social or institutional hypocrisy. Such types love gadgetry and technology, but they despise the commercialism that comes with the territory, and they tend to see bourgeois sham and sanctimony everywhere.

I have a very good friend that is ISTP. His Ti is so much different than mine that I have a hard time even relating to his.

While I'm researching ideas, concepts, and systems, he is researching more practical things like "how to properly install windows" or learning how to properly apply stain to wood.

I think that's the main difference. Ti seeks knowledge and to understand how things work. But, the 2 types desire to understand two totally different kinds of things. When I'm in Ti mode, which is most of the time, I really couldn't care less about the kinds of things he's researching. Without a doubt, those things have a real, practical use in life and I'm glad there are people who know how to do those things.

He seems just as passionate about learning how to remodel his own home as I am about reading C.S. Lewis.

He's a smart dude and has a lot of knowledge in his head. But, he's not book smart. He's smart in a practical sense, which is awesome.

It probably doesn't matter. Regardless of the label I give myself, I am still superior to any of the 16 archetypes.

Natural curiosity still requires that this be investigated. That, it's easier to make an MBTI-related post on this forum when I have a more stable reference point on typology.

Ah yes! The quote above my post reminded me of another thing. My ISTP friend is all about the present, the right here/right now. I'm always thinking into next week, next year, getting to the place in life I desire to be, etc.

He doesn't think into the future too much. He just enjoys THIS moment for what it is.

Your signature indicates that you think Se is your least used function, with Ne being your second most used function. How would you reconcile this with the possibility of being ISTP?

Is the order of your functions also under review here?

It's based off of a rather old function test. I haven't updated it due to how easily I can "read" function tests. (That is, analyze how a question affects the results before actually receiving the results) Theoretically, I could have been "reading" that particular test when I was taking it, thus skewing the results.

The order can be under review.

That makes no sense in ASCII.

What language are you using?

I don't believe an ISTP would have checked the translation of that message.
An ISTJ might have.
You could be ISTJ.
Or even INTJ.

Are you sure you're an I?

I'm not sure I'm an I, but from the standpoint of the I/E dichotomy, I lean much more towards being drained by other people than being recharged by other people. While I'm reconsidering type, it's an open possibility that I'm an E, but relative to other preferences, I'm fairly confident of the I.
