    I like your username.

Why not benzene though? So much more interesting (dat pi stacking), AND toxic .

So is toluene (toxic, that is). When I was in grad school I had to clean specialized painting equipment with a mixture of MEK and toluene - it was almost impossible to find gloves that were good for both.
I've been called a criminal, a terrorist, and a threat to the known universe. But everything you were told is a lie. The truth is, they've taken our freedom, our home, and our future. The time has come for all humanity to take a stand...

ahhh benzene is far too elegant a structure for me to identify with 8) the adorable lonely methyl group, relatively common presence in organic substances and the host of pedestrian uses including but not limited to jet fuel and an inhalant for bored lab techs has always felt fitting to me u_ u/

    Psh, gloves shmoves.

It permeates through most of them anyway. I've spilled toluene on myself more times than I can count. It actually isn't that bad. The methyl group is actually rather easily oxidized (to a carboxylic acid) in the body and can be removed with significantly less harm than benzene does. It's actually benzene's stability that makes it so hazardous (it has to be oxidized as a peroxide which can react readily with DNA basepairs).

i can't speak for anyone else here but.. i can honestly say i would probablyy not consider a career as a meth cook if i had better options. i think i must be a really lawful type

hard you sound like my last ochem professor... he kept trying to convince us we needed to smell everything (except some of the haloalkanes.. and thiols maybe..) to get a good profile of our new chemical friends, and that it was okay to taste certain reagents to see if they were still viable.

despite where the thread has gone i'm only an average ochem student u _u my true passion lies in microbes <--- fake chem nerd

Microbes don't exist. It's a conspiracy to sell soap.

    Again, I kid.
