You don't think you're ignorant? How arrogant!

Thanks for that, rhino! I was wondering how we got this far into a welcome thread for a sprite artist named Base, without a single "all your base" reference.

    Oh and, welcome, Base!

If you insist, here's my sprite portfolio. Base's Art and etc. Blog

I don't have any recent other stuff at the moment though, so you'll have to wait a bit for some of that stuff.

Hey, that's some pretty nice pixel art! It's sad that there isn't more demand for that in the industry now. It used to be that at least the handhelds used more of that, but the current gen (DS and PSP) is largely 3D now, and even the 2D stuff tends to be more rendered or photoreal (since they're not palletized, and higher rez). You still see the occasional title using classic hand-crafted pixel art, though.

Yup, I plan on learning to do some 3D stuff too. I know a bit of it but I'm far from doing anything substantial with it. There IS more opportunity of a pixel artist than you might think, though. Particularly because many developers venture into 2D before 3D, therefore they rely on artists to do it for them.

    Ah, but I'm rambling. Thanks!

Wow, you could really get me on a rant about pixel art...I love the stuff, and I dabble in it a bit when I can... I like what I saw and I have to ask: How did you get into it? And how did you go about learning it?

I'm such a tutorial junky but every time I look up "pixel art tutorial" on google I get pokemonz recoloring FTL... haha you just drew out the nerd in me like no other.

    Welcome btw

There's an excellent pixel artist named Derek Yu. He has a tutorial on his site that'll teach you the barbones basics (like how to anti-alias curves and things like that). After that, you should simply study sprites to learn new tricks to do things. It also REALLY helps to have a solid understanding of basic art theories and have strong traditional skills; it's pretty difficult to show something with tiny little squares, after all.

I got into it because I'd always wanted to learn how to do it, since the ability to show things like that was interesting to me. It was very difficult to actually get into the flow of doing it, it's more a test of endurance than skill. It takes a LOT of time sitting on your ass. Thanks again lol

Thanks for showing us your art. I really enjoyed that.

    It's good. You've got skills.

I hope you enjoy your stay here.

Derek be da man. I'm still just blown away by the sheer volume of high quality art in Aquaria, and the fact that one guy did that in a couple years.
