I find "technical artist" to be a very appropriate one. I see myself as a "technical artist", systematic but free flowing. I analyze a properties function so I can manipulate and maneuver it and myself as how I see fit.

Keirsey said "Crafter" or "Tactical Contender." Both of those sound pretty cool. And that "personality types made relevant" page said "Psycho Vigilante." ;)

Contender sounds good, if ENFP's get something like Challenger and INFJ's Defender.

I've liked the term Craftsman, be used.

I was married to an ISTP and I have an ISTP son.
Mechanic is a bit under-descriptive, isn't it.
But boy, to put it all in one word, that's tough!
Technical artist is good.

My son joined the military and became an explosives ordnance disposal technician...
not surprising, right?! Hahahaha!
He's was at the head of his class the whole time!
'Cool under pressure' is what his classmates call him.

Racecare drivers!

ISTPs could also be strong as scientists. I would suggest that Ti-Se dominant function in type theory would suggest the most objective way of thinking. Se observes the natural world in its most realistic manner, and Ti makes logical sense out of it. That seems ideal for the scientific method. Although it is also ideal to have some INTPs and others on the team to be as daring in idea space as ISTPs can be in real space.

hmm.. In working scenarios, I later sometimes hear of other's perceptions. Descriptive such as "The Total Package" or the "Master."

Which is foreign to my own perception and intent. Quite honestly don't know how to respond in hearing such things. So usually, I don't.

They'd make great emergency room surgeons. Glorified mechanics, not scared of blood or people freaking out, can evaluate/diagnose/resolve the issue while everyone else panics.
I'm sure there's a fun buzzword around all.. that.

I hate blood and anything gross like that almost puked after my class had to dissect a pig.
