this sounds like a very balanced ISTJ. lots of ISTJs are VERY picky (actually, I would say ISTJs are the most likely to be very picky of any type. not that I hold it against them, I'm a picky little bitch myself :D ), can miss the big picture and be total bureaucrats when it comes to externally imposed rules.
the rest seems right though. this particular ISTJ sounds like a 3w4 sp/sx
Edit: I actually relate to this a lot :D

Very informative indeed! He presented such a well rounded picture of ISTJs and it really helped to use some TV characters (and nice little graphics) to aid it all. It helped me to type some people I know better.

I wish there were more type descriptions like this for other types. :)

The narrator had a classic ISTJ voice ;)

Edit: I really liked this video, all jokes aside, thanks!

Extremely well-done video, though it was rather amusing that his first example was Dexter!

Only noticed one possible contradiction.

For dexter he says ISTJ's aren't picky about details like size of house, colour of car, food etc...
But then he says they are thorough and pay attention to detail. They are perfectionists.

If it was me buying a house, size would be pretty important to me. For a car, colour doesn't quite come that high compared to performance, price, make and accessories.

Opinions?

My favorite ISTJ says he could eat "anything" and that he sees food as fuel. On the other hand, he's extraordinarily picky about his clothing and about people's hair.

I think what the guy in the video may have meant is that people always say "SJs are so detail oriented and picky!" but the truth is that SJs are detail-oriented and picky about *what they, as an individual, especially care about* ...not everything in life.

Just my two cents.

Yeah my own way of justifying the video (not that we have any reason to treat it as a bible of sorts) would be to say I hone in on some specialized topics but for the rest of the world I just pick the easiest path.

Yeah that's what I'm pretty much saying in different words...Si types tend to be *very particular* about what their field or interests or preferred tastes are...however, that doesn't mean that SJs all care about status symbols or that they notice details or care about details about *everything.* One SJ could be obsessed with having the biggest house and nicest car, and another could be obsessed with his rare DVD collection.

But he also said that ISTJs were interested in the big picture and long term goals. I suppose he meant they were only interested in details that helped them achieve that. Perhaps you could say that ISTJs are good at determining amongst many complex details, what is important and necessary, and what is superfluous.

I think you pretty much said yourself: ISTJs are more concerned with how useful something is - I guess it depends on the ISTJ as to what is considered useful and important. The video made me think of my ISTJ grandfather. He cares about buying things that are going to be relatively cheap, efficient, reliable and effectively complete the tasks he needs it to perform. He has no interest in fancy cars, he just wants it to get him from A to B without breaking down and minimal financial burden. The car example is quite funny because my Mum often laughs as she compares him to my other grandfather (who died many years ago). He was clearly a ESTP who was mad about loud, powerful, classic, and glamorous cars. The ISTJ owns a mid-90s Ford Fairmont; the ESTP owned a 1972 Aston Martin DBS V8, which he bought on a whim. Talk about chalk and cheese. :D

Well no that's exactly where I see the contradiction. You've given an example that requires very careful attention to detail. Ask any engineer, optimization is worlds harder than finding maximum performance.

So the question is, where does the ISTJ draw the line on how much to optimize his or her life. Mariame Dearest and I concluded that the ISTJ simply decides to neglect portions of his or her life knowing it can't be perfect. Instead they decide to make one part of their life very fine tuned such as their career or their DVD collection.
