Fear is like a poison and can spread like wildfire throughout a group of people. Among other things it can paralyze the mind from making good judgements and decisions.

Having said that, what is your greatest fear? How would you (or did you) overcome it? What situations have you been in? Other relative thoughts are welcome! ;)

Is this only for the SJ's? Otherwise...

I'm not telling. :ninja:

Hmmm probably the thought of being the greatest failure around. One that thinks they can do everything but in reality can do absolutely nothing. All talk and no action. Overcoming it? Not sure if I succeeded, but I try to push myself to get results.

Also if this is for all types, it shouldn't be in the SJ forum...

Uhh, I could give the ones that sound predictably SJ. But that's not very interesting.

I have a fear of people getting angry at me. The closer I am to someone, the more it would hurt, and the faster I'd try to reverse their anger (i.e., wimp out).

I've had some weird fears since I was young:

Plants - This one is hard to explain, but put a thing of celery in my face and it scares the crap out of me. My old house use to have this huge boganvilla tree outside of it. It was massive and round and omg, scary. I refuse to look one up in google just because the tree scared the living crap out of me.

Metal grinding against metal - always creeped me out. If I scrape a fork against my teeth, I can feel it in my chest.

Lack of control - I've gone skating twice in the last 2 weeks with my sister. Being a newbie to skating really showed how an SJ reacts to something like that. It terrified me getting on the floor and having such a lack of control over my feet.

Falling - Popular one

Last one, being left in a situation that has no solution - I used to have dreams when I was young that I was stranded in a large room with this puzzle that had to be figured out in order to escape, but the puzzle was intentionally made impossible. It was so scary.

Sorry, I posted it in the wrong spot.

What about fear of rejection?

And Raz, are you sure you didn't hit a filling with that fork?

Maybe I should rephrase that to metal scraping against anything. I just hate that stuff! Never liked the feeling I get when I hear it.

Lol, without that, I wouldn't be in therapy! Seriously and jokingly. Of course I can attribute it to a sub-par upbringing (moving between houses with no stability at any + substance abusing parents). All that fucks with an ISTJ rather fiercely.

My ENFP brother seems to have taken it better, but we were both stuck in survival mode until we started seeing a therapist.

My greatest fear is of being trapped. Or being in a situation where being trapped is perceived as more likely. (It doesn’t actually have to be likely, and I can know this, whilst still being afraid.) It doesn’t have to be in a completely physical sense, but it’s the physical sense that genuinely scares me. It could be anywhere, but underground particularly does me in. I used to have major issues with elevators too. In fact, I think it really developed into a proper fear when I was trapped in an elevator as a kid for... an hour or so?

It’s not so bad now that I’m a little older (I have no issues with elevators anymore, at least), but I remember when I was on holiday a few years back, and we visited a cave, I was bordering on panic for a while. Once the guide started talking about the cave I was able to get my mind off it long enough that once I focused on the fact that I was 20-40 metres underground in a prehistoric cave again, it was no longer as scary.

If I were disabled or crippled in some way that was irreversible.

If that happens to me I've always told people to pull the plug. Even if there is no plug.

Well, I have a lot of things I'm not fond of (like rejection), but, I don't necessarily fear them- I just kind of avoid putting myself in those situations. ;)

I guess the only thing I "fear" is being left alone- not temporarily alone, but for long periods of time (months/years?). I just need the interaction with others. I don't know how to explain it any better than that.

Ah. How very ISTJ of you. :newwink:
That's why ISTJs sometimes participate in brotherhood-type organizations where that desire for belonging can be satisfied. Belonging is a good thing.

The biggest fears I started out my life with were fear of rejection and fear of not being perfect.

Growing old and addle-brained, with no money, and ending up at the mercy of people who mistreat or neglect me and there's nothing I can do about it.

Or, loss of independence.

The other is drowning. It's only this year that I got a car with electric windows because for some reason I imagine being in a bridge collapse and falling into the water stuck in a car with windows I can't crank down.
