    I would agree with this in that it is direct but I'm not sure if that would then be considered flirting.

    I agree with Hmm.
    I generally tell the person up front, sometimes bluntly, but there are also times where I try to flirt but end up just being really friendly and as time drags on the person will grow to think of me as a friend and all the while I was thinking I was flirting with them.
    So yeah, I can understand how that could be in extremes.
