Have a friend who I think is doing that, obviously there are other factors but I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas.

Speak with him about philosophy or anything deeper which can activate his Ne again. ;)

Hit them over the head with a wrench repeatedly.

Oh, you want them to be alive afterwards. Sorry, I got nothing.

I hate puzzles.

Essentially, get them to do something new, and orient them towards a creative endeavor, if possible. Learn about this new thing and make it. Participate in NaNoWriMo. Suggest a new book/series/game and play it together.

If you think it's a serious issue, I'd advise treating it like a regular psychological/behavioral problem instead of a typological one. Exercise, better eating habits, better sleep, and more outdoors time always helps. If it's very serious ask them if they think they might be clinically depressed, or maybe suggest they see a psychologist.

I kind of already was, but I figured more information/ideas couldn't hurt.

Flood them in 1960's nostalgic / noir movies until they get bored the fuck out of it. Make them watch Bela Tarr for 6 hours. Force them to binge watch old documentaries of History Channel.

Eventually, they'll rebel against it.
