Ha, better stop asking the INTJs they can't decide.

Experiments show that people subconsciously make decisions before consciously doing so. Also look into the phenomenon of confabulation: people apparently tend to simply make up narratives about whatever happens that may be wildly far from actuality.

Determinism is also simply a nicer way of looking at things. People aren't better than others, people aren't worse than others. They result from their circumstances. That means you don't get to congratulate yourself too much, and it also means you don't have to beat yourself up for not living up to the highest standards. It means that evil-doers didn't really make a choice to do evil things, which I prefer to think anyway because why would someone do that given free will? Free will just doesn't make sense.

That said, I do still think it is necessary to act as if there is free will to an extent. The illusion of free will persists no matter what. You can't live an automatic life. Believe me I've tried.

Recently there have been experiments showing quantum effects in the neuron microtubules, but that doesn't say much to me yet.

Yes, but it's heavily conditioned by forces outside of our control.

I believe in physics and brain chemistry dictating our actions. So no, for free will.

Citing determinism as a cop-out is damning, but the idea's irrefutable. We're all chemical cascades, cogs in cosmic clockwork, etc.

There is free will, but what is willed to be is meant to be.

Depends on the specificity in my opinion.

On one hand, your thoughts and mind are controlled by a series of chemical reactions that determine your wants and needs and how you react to certain things, while on the other you can still make choices going against your own "will", so wouldn't that be free will or is that merely a manifestation of the unconscious calculating away to make the best choices for you?

Now comes the question, is the unconscious really you? Or simply a guardian angel that tries to protect you, the ego, from danger?

Hard determinist myself, but I'm an INFP, what do I know? :P
"The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents... Some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new Dark Age.
