I love it but I didn't when I was younger. I'm sure having children changed that for me.

Used to, then I realized that I don't have to take seriously what other people think I should be doing/feeling over the holidays. Now I enjoy them as much I want to.

Mostly indifferent. Not close to family. Dislike the whole idea of gift-giving, at least in a commercial way. Time off is nice, quiet house is lonely+boring.

Nah...I really like Christmas. I'm not very close with my family at all, but I love getting gifts for close friends as a way of showing how thankful I am of them and their presence in my life.

It's the time of year I can allow myself to be mushy and sentimental and it's totally appropriate. It's nice.

I don't hate it for the same reasons you do, as in being alone. I hate it because the "spirit" of "gift giving" is more like, manslaugter in a mall parking lot and working retail until you can't feel your body and cannot spend any time with anyone other than strangers checking them out while they complain about their wait.

The spirit of some other idiot getting the best gift in the world for someone that'll just return it.
While I find it both amusing and annoying, I hate it and enjoy it. I hate that it's what it is now. Eff the fat guy in the red suit. I want a bonus and the month off.

We're supposed to slow down in the winter, but seemingly we pick up our pace and thrust ourselves into a nightmare. And whatever idiot thinks shopping for a great gift on the 23rd or 24th is brilliant needs to either accept that there's a consequence for waiting for the last second or go home and avoid the madness.

I was this way for a number of years, then found my own meaning and holiday spirit. I, too, dislike the commercialization, rushing the seasons, stupid canned music in public places, banal holiday parties, etc. so I just don't do that any more. I spend time with the people I want to be with, stay away from annoying crowded places, and observe the season in my own way.

I love it. I don't have to be with people to enjoy it. It is not religious for me, so its always nice to experience it just for it's existence rather than what it's supposed to mean.
I like the decorations, the special events, engagements, lights, music, special food, the trees, the scents, shoppers, the presents, and how everything just transforms into something out of the norm.

"don't believe in holidays"? What does that mean exactly? That there shouldn't be any / no cultural time set aside for celebration?

When I was very young, I liked the holidays -- there was food and toys and trips and wonderful things that happened only during the holidays.

Then, as I got older, I really started to hate them. The trips to visit people I barely knew (AKA family) were an obligation and emotional stress; the presents were typically things I didn't care for or didn't want, and I hated the inevitable disappointment; my dad's alcoholism usually also wrecked the holiday events, some of the worst family memories I have are of awful fights happening around the holiday season. i also did not like how the whole country seemed all-so-caught-up in these events that really were just a subterfuge for the way things really were... it all seemed so fake and superficial to me.

After I was married, I actually started to enjoy holidays more spending it with my in-laws, who had various traditions that made the day more about family, and I actually felt accepted into the family and valued the collective pool of experiences we were building together. And, as I had my own children, holidays started to become better too. I still don't like the cultural overcommercialism, including getting inundated by Christmas music and advertisements sometimes before Thanksgiving, but I like the time I spend with my children. It is so different than the time I spent with my family growing up, and in a positive way.

Yup, that sounds similar to my experience.

The holidays are a time for drinking beer and cursing under your breath at family parties. It's a special time where the same Christmas songs play so much that you want to puke up mint candy canes. It's a wonderful time where everyone flocks to church, while you stay at home and finish off yesterday's ham. The holidays are truly a time of giving gifts, and then returning the gifts given.

I wish I could shut it down.

it means I dont' celebrate holidays. Birthdays and holidays are just like any other day for me.

I don't hate my family(they can be very stupid and irrational) but I can't stand being around them. I usually eat and avoid any family gatherings. I get that people don't like me but it sucks when ur own family members dislike you. I don't really care at this point, I am who I am.

You sound like an extrovert that's trying to be introverted.... Just sayin'... It happens... I knew someone that went through severe depression as a teenager until he went to get help, and whoever he went to diagnosed him...

I mean I spend time in my head, but I need to extrovert too (more of an ambivert tbh)... I'd imagine everyone needs too (that's why intro/extro alike socialize). And forum posting will help, but IM convos/actual face-to-face conversations are where it's at.

And before you spew a bunch of "I hate being around people" bullshit... That doesn't make you an introvert.... And that mentality will just make you hate people more and more... Because people reject people with that mentality, for obvious reasons...

I like 'em. Although as I'm getting older, I find preferring wanting home alone time more than visiting people. But when I DO get out of the shell and visit people, I usually like it.

Don't ever remember hating the holidays except when my mom used to nag me to go to people's houses. So yeah, this means I've always preferred being left to my own devices.

I want to change my vote. holidays = win. but I barely celebrated, only the minimum amount demanded by family. time off was nice, and quiet house was awesome this year (but construction workers in my apartment all day yesterday AND today, starting at 8am....sadface). and drank alcohol at one family christmas this year for the first time = vastly improved experience. (my parents don't drink and alcohol is never served at family events, but a few of us brought booze this year)

I am really unable to get caught up in the commercial aspect of things. My house is no tree. No decorations. I don't send cards and give only small, meaningful gifts. I play instrumental Christmas music and some familiar hymns. I try to spend time with my family and old friends on holidays and I think about people more, so I still get that warm loving feeling. Any trip to the store at this time of year depresses me. There is no official celebration. Just a lot of reconnecting, which I can appreciate.

I have this stance too. If I participated in all the "Expected" stuff I would be totally devoid of joy at this time of year. Life is too short. I have the money to spend on people and decorations, but I would rather spend it on people that need it (or can sincerely appreciate it.)
