You're looking at Ti through a Te lens. (naturally!)
It might be expressed linguistically or in some other formal notation - but that's not how it's experienced internally.

I have an image in my mind of how Ti works...

Probably Ti, as viewed via Ni...

It's a weird image...

Don't know quite how to describe it...

It's like your consciousness is gliding, from first person perspective, along and right above one of those tubules from a 3D diagram of a molecule's structure...

From one atom ball (logical deduction) to another...

And everything but the tubule and the ball is darkness...

And the tubule and the ball are made of light...

And, the tubule and the ball aren't actually formed until you've traveled along/to them...

It's almost like this invisible self that is your soul/consciousness is moving along and thus forming the tubule as it moves through space/time...

From one atom ball/deduction to another...

It's probably not how you guys experience it...

Lol. Is that how INTJs flirt?
I find your function clusters anomalously attractive. *wiggles monobrow*

That, and very heavy mouth-breathing.

So you're suggesting that people are "drawn to" a function but that this doesn't indicate a preference?

I'm tempted to say "does not compute", but I know how you hate that. ;)

Preference of cognition is not conscious. Preference in MBTI means "orientation".

What I'm talking about being "drawn" to here is a similar aspect of a "non-preferred" process to your preferred process. If you're an introverted judging type, then you may relate to descriptions of introverted judging. If they are not defined well, then that can mean Ti types testing rather high on Fi and vice versa.

There's also the issue of behavior versus thought process. Some of the descriptions veer into behavioral descriptions. I don't see type as behavior, but a mindset. I realize the line blurs between the two at times, but if you equate behavior with mindset, then you end up with Keirsey, who says all artists are SPs and all scientists NTs, and it's like a notch above astrology.

Now, I am NOT saying that people may not have "atypical" function order. Just to clarify that. I just don't think the tests are typing function order 100% accurately.

If the test isn't efective at establishing relative strength of preference for each function then it can't be relied upon to establish type (i.e. top 2).
If it's a reliable test of type (order of top 2), then there is no basis for concluding that the rest of the order is somehow invalid or inaccurate.

I disagree, because we're talking specifics versus generalities. I think the test can give a general overview of type, but not pin down exact function order. The test does account for that; it often spits out a person's correct type (as far as how they self-identify), despite their cognitive process order being different from what would be expected for their type or even what they may see in themselves in reality. I think it types the whole mindset pretty well, but fails to accurately detail the full order of the 8 cognitive processes. Since MBTI tests mainly determine the top two cognitive processes also (your main judging & perceiving functions), then I think these cognitive processes tests yield pretty much the same results from a different method.

As for it being "reliable", I don't think it is; I do think it can be useful. It's just another tool to use in self-typing. It can be faulty for some, just as MBTI is faulty for many. Typing yourself is not a black and white science anyhow. It's not "either/or" in this case. It can be both good in that it's useful and not 100% reliable.

Let me give an metaphor. You have a car that breaks down a lot. It is not reliable, but it is still useful at times. It's usefulness is limited though; the more ground you cover, the more likely you are to break down at some point. It's really only safe for a short distance, and even then, it depends on the driver. That's how I see these tests. They can only go so far, it depends on who is taking them, and they are not fully reliable. But are they useful? Can they get you on the road to your whole type? I think so.

The fact that the test does differentiate between all 8 processes as opposed to just having the 4 dichotomies seems to have a leg up over MBTI, except the above mentioned aspect of being drawn to functions with some "similarity" throws a wrench into it. I'm not sure how that could be overcome in a test. I think it may be overreaching to think a written test could type your function order 100% correctly.

If I am "drawn" to idiosyncratic expresssion of values(Fi), why would I behave in a way that is group-norm directed(Fe)? This makes no sense.

One's inferior function is the opposite of one's dominant function. Inferior = unused, undifferentiated, undeveloped. The test results (the individual's self-perception) support this in the majority of cases. So what's the problem? And what would be a good way of measuring one's preference, given that you think answering questions about it is not a good way?

I think I pretty much answered this all above.

Preference of cognition is not conscious.
If that were true it would make a nonsense of any and all self-report testing/analysis in this field. End of story.

Now, I am NOT saying that people may not have "atypical" function order. Just to clarify that. I just don't think the tests are typing function order 100% accurately.
Talking about % accuracy is irrelevant with a nebulous unscientifc concept such as MBTI type and cognitive functions. We can't prove with 100% accuracy that they even exist, let alone their hypothetical 'order'.

I maintain that the function order derived from tests such as these is at least as relevant / legitimate as any of the speculative function orders proposed by CF 'experts'. 'Tis all.
And that people who rigidly maintain that someone with Ti/Ne as their top two preferred functions MUST be a "Fe user" and not a "Fi user" are deluded on every possible level. Because even the CF theorists don't say that.

I've taken this test too many times I think. To combat bias this time I tried to forget about MBTI completely and choose based on instinct. I may have ended up being more moderate but who knows.

Types: INTP > ENTP > INFP

While I do score Fi, I don't identify with descriptions of it. The descriptions might be off, but I'm more likely to believe that it's because of getting to the same results but with different approaches. I get Fi results but not with an Fi approach.

Before I ever did function tests, I read the descriptions. My conclusion at that time was Ne Ti and Si all fit near perfectly and the rest might have some parts I identified with but not a large amount. That may have made me more trusting of theory when I found out those are the first three in INTPs.

Found results from 6 months ago in a different thread

Everything is normal (suggesting INTP) with one exception: Ni is my strongest function?!

OK; so now I have finally gotten around to trying it again!
Now, understanding the concepts better, especially how the Ti stuff is much more "exactly me" than I previously thought; I believe it is more accurate:

The Four Temperaments
Corresponding best-fit temperaments based on your profile: Theorist; secondly Improviser; then Stabilizer; and lastly, Catalyst.

(This is what I got last time. Still don't understand why Improviser (SP) would be in second).

Lead (Dominant) Process
Extraverted Intuiting (Ne): Exploring the emerging patterns. Wondering about patterns of interaction across various situations. Checking what hypotheses and meanings fit best. Trusting what emerges as you shift a situation’s dynamics.

Support (Auxilliary) Process
Introverted Thinking (Ti): Gaining leverage (influence) using a framework. Detaching to study a situation from different angles and fit it to a theory, framework or principle. Checking for accuracy. Using leverage to solve the problem.

If these cognitive processes don't fit well then consider these types: INTP, or ENFP

Ne dominance to that degree is extraverting, whether you realize it or not.

ENPs are "introverted extroverts."

Just throwin' that out there. Your Ne score is quite similar to mine.

In the past I too used to get ENTP over and over again. Sometimes because Ne seemed at the same level or even minimally higher than Ti, than for no reason at all, since the order fit INTP. So I tested again today and this time it's consistent with the last one. Otherwise I'd be the world's most introverted extrovert!
